20 inspiring travel quotes

Like many people, I’m a sucker for a good inspirational quote. I’ve long had a section as part of this website that’s dedicated to my favorite quotes. I typically publish a new favorite each week and as of late, I’ve felt that it’s time for me to dedicate a lengthier post to showcasing some of my more memorable favorites.
To start - as a bonus I guess you could say - I would like to share one of my own that was previously only published via Twitter.
“Travel is about cutting all ties and ditching all preconceived judgements, and getting truly lost - because only then can you find yourself.” – Brandon Elijah Scott

“Wanderlust - a desire to travel to understand one's very existence; an instinctive motive.” – unknown

“There's a race of men that don't fit in, A race that can't sit still; So they break the hearts of kith and kin, And they roam the world at will. They range the field and rove the flood,  And they climb the mountain's crest; Their's is the curse of the gypsy blood, And they don't know how to rest.” – Robert W. Service

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustine

“One doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time.” – Andre Gide

“Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. The mind can never break off from the journey.” – Pat Conroy

“Travel does what good novelists also do to the life of everyday, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear. Travel does this with the very stuff that everyday life is made of, giving to it the sharp contour and meaning of art.” – Freya Stark

“You lose sight of things - and when you travel, everything balances out.” – Daranna Gidel

“When we tire of well-worn ways, we seek for new. This restless craving in the souls of men spurs them to climb, and to seek the mountain view.” – Ella Wheeler Wilcox

“The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes, but in having new eyes, in seeing the universe with the eyes of another, of hundreds of others, in seeing the hundreds of universes that each of them sees.” – Marcel Proust

“I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” – Robert Frost

“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” – Jack Kerouac

“Find life experiences and swallow them whole. Travel. Meet many people. Go down some dead ends and explore dark alleys. Try everything. Exhaust yourself in the glorious pursuit of life.” – Lawrence K. Fish

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

“I soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.” – Lillian Smith

“Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

“When we get out of the glass bottle of our ego and when we escape like the squirrels in the cage of our personality and get into the forest again, we shall shiver with cold and fright. But things will happen to us so that we don’t know ourselves. Cool, unlying life will rush in.” – D.H. Lawrence

“The wise traveler learns not to repeat successes but tries new places all the time.” – Paul Fussell

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” – Ernest Hemingway

“But that's the glory of foreign travel, as far as I am concerned. I don't want to know what people are talking about. I can't think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can't read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can't even reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses.” – Bill Bryson

“When you come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on or you will be taught how to fly.” – Barbara J. Winter

My favourite is probably Tolkien's 'Not all those who wander are lost'. So many friends and family assume that I'm lost by taking the path of a nomad or a gypsy but without understanding the freedom and joys of wandering.

Like the quotes. Your site is terrific. Thing about travelling--and I don't do much--is that people are the same and different wherever you go.

Thank you very much. While people may be the same, each place has something unique to offer a traveler. I love taking it all in.
