American River Parkway runs along the American River in 23 miles of parks, boat launching points, and outdoor fun. At any point along the river, you'll find a place to stop and experience the natural landscape. At Discovery Park, enjoy trails and the archery range, bring a picnic, or make use of the boat launch and get out on the water. Ancil Hoffman Park is a unique place boasting a golf course, the Effie Yeaw Nature Center, and reconstructed Maidu Native American homes. If fishing is on your must-do during your trip, make sure to head over to William B. Pond Recreation Area and visit the artificial fishing pond filled with trout and catfish.
Enjoy a Bike Ride
While you're in Sacramento, take advantage of the Jedidiah Smith Memorial Trail otherwise known as the American River Bike Trail. Take your pick of 32 miles of paved pathway. This bike trail, used by commuters, joggers, and casual bike riders throughout the year, sees more than five million people annually. Considered the longest purpose-built trail in the United States, you will pass amazing sights and scenes along the way: Discovery Park, Sutter's Landing, Guy West Bridge, Fair Oaks Walking Bridge, Folsom Lake, and so much more. Feel free to stop along the way and grab a bite to eat, too. You can make a whole day out of the trail.
Take a Hike
Sure, you can walk the American River Bike Trail, but there are so many other hiking trails to choose from. When you're ready to get up close and personal with nature and stretch your legs, you'll find something at every skill level. Lock Leven Lakes Trail is 10 miles of scenic Sacramento and is a challenging trail while the Stevens Trail is an easy to moderate trail filled with oak pines and gold mines. Cosumnes River Preserve gives you two trails to choose from. The Cosumnes RiverWalk is a three-mile dirt trail, while the Lost Slough Wetland Walk is a one-mile, paved trail great for people of all ages and levels.
When you visit Sacramento, there is so much to do and so many ways to play. Bring a boat, rent a bike, and even find a pony to ride. You can enjoy everything this beautiful area has to offer. Have fun in the city, see the sights of the capital, and when you need to breathe fresh air, head out to the parks, trails, and paths.
