And in the more touristy parts of the city, they can indeed luxuriate in more Scottish stereotypes than a day out at Sean Connery’s house. But if you’re only in the capital for its heritage, you’re missing out big time.
This is the vibrant cosmopolitan heart of the British Isles, brimming with plenty of hip hangouts to enjoy.
So put away your tartan and toss your cabers for the day – here are a few places to consider when you’re hitting this cultural heartland.
Inevitably, the first place you’ll visit is Edinburgh airport, a bustling flight hub welcoming thousands of passengers every week. And while you probably won’t spend much time chilling there (unless you love some plane spotting), knowing its amenities could prove vital.
If you’re driving to the airport, the Edinburgh airport long stay car park will provide all the service you need to avoid the hassle of labyrinthine car parks. In addition, the airport is brimming with cafes and shops for you to enjoy.
We do Voodoo
When you hit Princes Street – the central shopping location in the capital – nothing beats finding a quiet bar to enjoy a meal and some great food.
And you’ll find nowhere better in the area than the Voodoo Rooms, a bar and restaurant housed in a former ballroom.
The drink selection is varied, the food is excellent and the service is second-to-none. It even features multiple rooms where bands, comedians and burlesque acts perform all year round.
This is the jumping hotspot of the city centre – and one of Edinburgh’s best kept secrets.
A love of laughs
For many, the Scottish are defined by their dark sense of humour. The Frankie Boyles of this world don’t come from nowhere. The Stand’s comedy venue in the capital has been fostering these unique talents for decades.
This dark basement comedy club plays host to well-established and up-and-coming acts every day of the week – and few fail to disappoint.
At times the comedy can be challenging and off the wall. In fact, that’s the point. For an offbeat evening, don’t hesitate to visit the Stand.
Vintage vinyls
Where there are hipsters, there is vinyl. This is a scientific fact, like gravity. And Stockbridge, an affluent district not far from Edinburgh’s city centre, holds one of the best record stores in the country.
Voxbox Music contains all the vinyl you could need, and regularly plays host to the coolest live acts. A much-loved record store, this is where to hit if you want to nab some cool points on your holiday.
