How to get there?
The city has an international airport and there are many low cost flights that link Krakow to nearby cities, including Paris and Berlin. There are three shuttle between the airport and the city center.
Where to stay?
Krakow is a city that can be explored on foot. Book a hotel in Krakow in advance if you want to stay near the Old Town and the Jewish Quarter, two areas filled with historical buildings.
What to eat?
Do not miss the local cuisine. The most famous dish are pierogis, dumplings that can be filled with a variety of filings. The most typical fillings are cabbage, white cheese and meat, and there are dumplings filled with blueberry jam. There are many other local dishes, ranging from a wide range of soups to cutlets served with mushrooms, potatoes and salads. There is even more choice for dessert, including sernik cheesecake and szarlotka apple cake.
What not to miss?
Wawel castle is located on a hill on the banks of the Vistula river. This castle was the site of one of the earliest settlements in the city. Explore the Senator's Hall, which used to be the throne room, and the Envoys' Hall. Do not miss the armoury, which is filled with historical weapons, a cannon, spears and swords. The castle and the cathedral located on the castle grounds are one of the main attractions in this ancient city.
Where to enjoy a walk?
Walk along the Royal Route, a walk that covers most of the city's landmarks, from its churches and squares to the Wawel castle hill. Along this route you will find St Florian's Church and one of the city's most visited squares, Plac Matejki. The Old Town is located next to the square. Some of the most famous attractions in the Old Town and the ancient Barbican and Florianska Gate, an area now filled with shops. Next to Florianska is another church, St Mary's Church, which is considered to be one of the city's symbols. A short walk away is the Rynek, a market square. There are many other landmarks in the area, ranging from one of Krakow's oldest churches, St Adalbert's Church, to the Grodzka Street.
Which museums to visit?
There are many museums in the city. The Pharmacy Museum is a museum located in the Old Town. In this museum you will find barrels where pharmacists used to make medicinal wines, a laboratory filled with glass vials, glazed apothecary vessels and a hall with renaissance and neo-baroque chest of drawers where herbs were kept. Another museum is the Archdiocesan Museum, located on Kanonicza Street. It is here where the rooms where Pope John Paul II used to stay at are located. The National Museum has several buildings peppered around the Old Town, and one of the country's largest art collections. If you are into planes, spend an afternoon exploring the airplanes and helicopters at the Polish Aviation Museum.
