January is coming to an end and it's the time of year when people are starting to think about booking their summer getaway. Florida, Barcelona and Paris are always popular choices, but not everybody's idea of the perfect holiday involves resorts with swimming pools, beaches or bustling cities. Some people prefer to experience the best that nature can offer and enjoy the great outdoors.
But there are a myriad of destinations you've probably never considered before.
Lima and Machu Picchu, Peru
Unknown to many, Lima offers some of the best surfing outside of Hawaii. It may not look as picturesque but with coastline stretching more than 1,500 miles, it's a surfing haven. Alternatively, visit the 15th century Inca site at Machu Picchu. Located over 2000 metres above sea level, this historic settlement is closely surrounded by clouds and offers breath taking views.
Faroe Islands, Denmark
If you're considering a visit to Scandinavia and the Arctic Circle, you probably won't think – or have heard of – the Faroe Islands. But these Danish islands are particularly worth a visit in 2015, as it's one of two places to view a solar eclipse on 20th March. If this isn't enough to tempt you, this is also a great place to go hiking and see the Northern Lights.
The Pyrenees, Spain
Located between Spain and France, this natural European border climbs over 3000 metres at its highest point and covers an area that measures over 100,000 square kilometres. This is a fantastic location for outdoor lovers and the more adventurous, as it offers mountaineers the chance to camp mountain side. Or, if you're not much of a climber there are groups that cycle the route. But be warned, this isn't for the faint hearted! Just make sure to get in touch with your family when you've completed the ride. Send loved ones a small parcel so they know you're still alive!
Quebec and Newfoundland, Canada
When most people think of Canada, they think of Ontario or Vancouver, but travelling eastwards to Quebec and Newfoundland is a great option for adventure lovers. Go kayaking in the Manicouagan Reservoir in Quebec, one of the world's oldest crater sites that measures approximately 5km in width. Or, you can head to Newfoundland and hike through L'Anse Aux Meadows, see icebergs or visit the Devils Nose caves.
Treks through the Amazon Rainforest, the Australian Outback or climbing at the Grand Canyon make great holidays. But next time you book, consider these options.
