As many of you know (from my tweets and biography), I’m a lover of fine whiskey’s (Irish and Bourbon are top-notch as far as I’m concerned), but did you know that I’m also quite the beer aficionado? If you’ve had a perusal of my Bucket List, you will see that I’ve tried well over 800 beers from all around the world... And I have to say that beer style – much like food style – is a sure fire way to distinguish a country or region. For example, I absolutely love Germany’s beer from Bavaria, but by going to the other areas of Germany, the beer, like the food can change.
After trying so many beers from all over, I have accomplished three things...

  1. A righteous, but petite beer-inspired gut, which says more about me than that I’m just a grubby out-of-shape roamer, but that I have experienced my (WAY MORE THAN) fair share beers.
  2. I’ve opened up my range of taste to where there are around 5 beers in all the beers I’ve tried that I’d prefer not to have again, but that’s it. I find that most beers are quite drinkable, and enjoyable, each in their own ways. While I seriously love Belgian anything! And of course, German beers are typically always nice, I also quite enjoy a good British bitter, Irish stout, and American craft beer when the opportunity presents itself.
  3. Speaking of tastes, I’ve also narrowed down my absolute favorite styles of beer, so that when I’m shopping for beer in another country, when someone explains the beer’s taste or the style it was made in, then I know immediately if I’m in the mood for that beer or not – and even though I love most styles of beer, I prefer Belgian blondes, German hefeweizens, and the occasional Belgian trippel hits the spot nicely. But don’t be deterred, I do have love for the various bitters, stouts, lagers, ales, and majority of the other 100+ varied brew styles of the world.
The point of this article is to encourage your exploring of cultures and places to extend just a bit further than the culinary arts. Get out there and try as many new beers as you can get your hands on!
