Croatia is a recent addition to the EU, and over the last few years it has completely transformed its image from a war-torn country struggling for independence, to a premier visitor destination. Still one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, the charming walled city of Dubrovnik is known as The Pearl of the Adriatic for its extraordinary beauty, excellent cuisine, the red-tiled ambience of the Old Town with its picturesque, narrow cobbled streets and unsurprisingly has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This Croatian gem caters for a multitude of travellers, whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday, a city break where you can soak up some history and culture or some delicious Mediterranean cuisine, this versatile city really does have it all. Dubrovnik is a unique place with a unique atmosphere…check out our guide to some of Dubrovnik’s highlights.

Walk the City Walls
A relaxing stroll around the city walls should be your number one priority on a trip to Dubrovnik, and it’s the perfect way to get familiar with the city. You’ll enjoy fantastic views of the Old Town, decorated by its distinctive terracotta roofs as well as the old port and the dazzling waters of the Adriatic.

The War Photo Museum
Croatia was once part of Yugoslavia and has a turbulent history. At the War Photo Museum, you can walk through a poignant gallery of journalism from Croatian wartime and visit permanent exhibitions such as ‘Ex-Jugoslavia 1991-1999’. Spanning two floors, the images capture the devastation that the Croatian War of Independence caused to the country, soldiers and Croatian civilians.

Hit the Beach at Lokrum
As well as offering beauty and culture in abundance, Dubrovnik is also a great destination for a relaxing beach holiday. There are plenty to choose from, but many holidaymakers choose to leave the mainland and hop on the ferry to visit the nearby island of Lokrum. As well as enjoying a great view of the Old Town from the sea, randomly there’s also an outdoor gym here too.

Dominican Monastery
For all its beauty, Dubrovnik can become overwhelming at times, especially when the cruise ships roll in to the port and bring hordes of eager tourists with them. The Dominican Monastery is a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the crowds, and houses the St Sebastian’s Church as well as a museum. Here you can view a variety of treasures and artefacts including decorative vestments and carvings of the series of fifteen mysteries of the Rosary.

Wine and Dine
Dubrovnik boasts amazing gastronomic fayre, locally sourced food and drink, and a vibrant restaurant scene in Dubrovnik, where you can sample some of the best Croatian delicacies and wine. There are plenty of good seafood restaurants dotted around the city, (Wanda (incredible side-street scampi) and seafood specialise Mea Culpa are two of the best.

To wash it all down, D’Vino is the city’s first wine bar and serves up some of the best Croatian offerings, with more than 100 domestic varieties available. If you’re feeling peckish, you can even order a purse-friendly cheese platter to accompany it.

The Travel Essentials
Flight Only – Dubrovnik is serviced by airlines such as Flybe, KLM and of course Croatia Airlines.
Travel Packages – check stylish travel deals site Secret Escapes for exclusive weekend break offers.
Accommodation Only – The increasingly popular AirBnB has plenty of local hosts in Dubrovnik.
