Everything but the kitchen sink: Essential travel kit you might not have considered

Preparing to go on vacation takes a lot of organizing and all too often things are forgotten at the last minute. Starting early on making a list means it’s easier to be sure everything is included, and items can then be checked off against it as packing is done.
Forward planning
Different kinds of trips require different supplies. Luggage has to be slimmed down for flying, whereas it makes sense to save money by carrying food and drink when traveling by car. A long trip obviously requires more supplies than a short one. Destinations also need to be researched, particularly with regard to the weather that can be expected there and any cultural issues around clothing.

Papers
Often thinking about what they will need in their destination leads to people forgetting what they need to get there! Passports, visas, travel tickets and any vaccination certificates required will need to be somewhere accessible but that doesn’t mean they need to be packed last. They’re safest tucked into the purse or wallet that goes everywhere with the traveler, and the packing list can include a note to double-check on this before departure.

Clothes
When packing clothes, it’s best to plan day-by-day and include complete outfits, with socks and underwear. Extra footwear may be needed for hiking or for relaxing on the beach. Swimwear is a good idea even for those not heading for a beach (just in case) and it’s advisable to have at least one piece of formal or evening wear in case occasion demands it. A warm sweater or shawl should be included regardless of the destination because it’s always possible for the weather to change.

Electronics
High up on the list of the most common things people forget to pack are mobile phones, phone chargers and cameras. Depending on the trip, a computer may also be needed. Depending on the location, it may be necessary to include an adaptor or two—these can be bought at most airports but then it’s necessary to pay airport prices.

Health and beauty
Anybody taking prescription medication on vacation should keep it in its original packaging and take a note from a doctor explaining why it’s needed, but it’s important to note that some countries may still restrict some meds—doctors can usually advise on this. It’s best to take an extra week or two of important meds in case of getting stranded. For some destinations, water treatment tablets may be required, and it’s a good idea to pack a small first aid kit. Sun cream is essential for most vacations, even in winter sports centers.

Travel to particularly hot, cold or dry locations can be rough on the skin, so alongside the standard cosmetic kit, packing a strong moisturizer and dermaroller results in being prepared for any eventuality. Razors, soap, cleanser, toothpaste and toothbrushes can be packed at the last minute. Eye drops should be stored somewhere easy to reach so they can provide relief after long journeys.
