Exploring the Mediterranean by Air

The Mediterranean Sea is one of those must sees, and that’s no hyperbole. I’ve had the pleasure of touring many of the greatest places on or not far from the Med coast, and I have no problems admitting that it’s a place I still romanticize and dream of. I could so easily live in Spain, or France, or Italy, each are magical in their own ways. Imagine it: Waking up each day to the sun rising in Venice, or being able to read a book and look out over miles of vineyard north of Gerona, or what about the amazing seaside towns of Croatia. There are a million different gems all along the Mediterranean coast, and truly experiencing them all will take a lifetime, and more, but with the economic flights available all across Europe, there is no better time to start exploring.

There are countless airlines who offer cheap flights from the UK to almost any desired (and some not so desirable) locales from Portugal to Turkey. And with such a variety of culture, food, and the idiosyncrasies each possess, it can be ridiculously difficult to nail down on one destination, let alone a full itinerary. Truthfully, if you have the chance, and the funds, take several months off at a time and roam, take flights from place to place and see the differences, the likenesses, and all of the amazing details in-between – believe me, people are inherently good, and if you keep your wits about you, you can tread smoothly, making friends all along the way, in just about anywhere the journey takes you.

When I travelled through Europe, I went for nine months, with only a backpack, some gear, and a laptop, and I explored with open eyes and wrote about my experiences – many of which you can read about on this blog. And my point in mentioning my extended European trip is to relate my experiences of this sort of travel, because… I travelled as a backpacker; So I walked, I hitchhiked, I took the rail, the underground and the occasional bus, and I went by air. It was glorious and so neat that for anywhere between €50 to £75, I was able to go from the moody United Kingdom to sunny Spain, and from there to blistering Marrakech. That means, WITHIN MERE HOURS I was in a totally different climate, ready to experience something totally new and exciting.

I’m from the U.S. (unfortunately), and our short distance travel is an awful mess – if you don’t have a car, you have to rent one, or suffer the fate of the over-priced air ticket – so, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I realized I could go from Belfast or Edinburgh or London, UK, to Venice or Dubrovnik, or Corfu, or Faro. How amazing our technology has evolved.

If you’re planning a trip in Europe, consider visiting the many colorful and unique places of the great Mediterranean. Or there’s always Scotland, a place near and dear to my heart. If you do decide on the Med, definitely don’t miss Barcelona, Ibiza, Pisa, Venice, Dubrovnik, and a Greece island or two, or five. Trust me, it’s well worth the flight over.
