Feeling the rush of skiing in the Alps

For many keen vacationers, the idea of choosing the south of France as a skiing destination can seem a little counterintuitive. Isn’t it where all the hottest beaches in the region are? Are you sure that the south of France isn’t where tourists go to top up their tans and feast on ice cream?
The wonderful thing about this region of France is that it plays host to so many different landscapes, climates, activities, and environments. The southern Alps are right on the doorstep too, so it is a mistake to write off the area as the sole preserve of wine drinkers and beach bunnies – it is one of the best locations in the world for skiing.

In fact, there are a hundred and one different reasons why you should pick the south of France for your next skiing vacation. If the Alps are not for you, the Pyrenees are right next door, so winter sports enthusiasts are always spoilt for choice here. For all of those people who have not yet experienced the rush of skiing in the Alps, it is time to strap on your boots, grab your poles, and head on out there.

Reveling on the Alpine slopes

The French Alps are widely considered to be one of the best locations on the planet for skiing, snowboarding, and other winter sports. There is certainly enough space on offer because they span all the way from Switzerland to the southern cities of Nice and Marseille. The highest peak reaches a remarkable 15,781 feet above sea level – this is the very top of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe. If you are looking to ski and catch a tan, check out the Isola 2000 ski resort, which catches the most sun out of any of the Alpine ranges.

Finding the right equipment

For vacationers on a budget, or inexperienced skiers looking to build up their skills, it can sometimes feel like this kind of vacation is an unaffordable expense – especially considering all of the equipment and tools that need to be bought. However, there are lots of different ways to balance out the costs. For example, if you are not yet sure whether skiing will become a regular part of your life, you can buy your safety equipment and hire poles from the resort itself. You will need to invest in one of the many waterproof, breathable and warm ski jackets available before you head out on a trip.

Avoiding the summer crowds

While it is true that the Alps can get very crowded during the summer months, it is still possible to seek out slightly more relaxed resorts. For instance, the Valberg and Auron slopes almost always tend to be less crowded in the summer than resorts such as Isola 2000. These are not “compromise” locations either – Auron offers a stunning 130 kilometers of ski runs and slopes for winter sports enthusiasts to investigate and explore. For this region of France, the best time to take a skiing trip is usually in or around January.
