It’s fair to say that people don’t normally associate the largest of Spain’s Canary Islands with hiking. Tenerife has gorgeous beaches, year-round sunshine and a reputation as something of a party destination. The fact that it also boasts beautiful, rugged scenery and a plethora of options for hikers of all ages and abilities is often overlooked. Fancy doing something different this summer? Then look no further than these top tips for hiking in Tenerife.
Mount Teide
Situated in the heart of Teide National Park, Mount Teide is a must for any serious hikers. It’s Spain’s highest peak, measuring just over 3,700 meters, and draws holidaymakers from all over the world. There’s something other-worldly about the lunar landscapes and bizarre rock foundations, but so loved is the area that a number of inhabitants have expressed a desire to have their ashes scattered here. The climb itself is tough and if you suffer from altitude sickness, it’s worth consulting your doctor before embarking on any grand expeditions. If you choose First Choice for your Tenerife holidays, you’ll place yourself in a prime location to admire this magnificent mountain.

The Angana Mountains
Mount Teide may be Spain’s highest peak but the Angana Mountains are regularly voted Tenerife’s most popular walking spot. Tucked away in the north east of the island, they offer prospective hikers the opportunity to explore Tenerife in peace. Feast your eyes on the forestry and vertigo-inducing ravines and experience something of the real Tenerife while you’re at it. The circular Cruz del Carmen – Chinamada trail (around 12km) is tough on the quads but a fine walk all the same.

The Masca Ravine
If ravines are your thing, you want to head for the Masca Valley, in the west of the island. The three hour descent is spectacular, culminating at the foot of the Los Gigantes cliffs. From there you can return to the start point by boat, or, if you want a real challenge, retrace your steps on foot back up the slope to the Masca Village.

Buenavista del Norte
As the name suggests, this trail is known for its sensational views. It’s an easy, well-marked coastal path suitable for children as well as adults. If you get tired of walking, why not take a moment to stop, relax and enjoy the mountain backdrop? You’ll feel rested in no time!

Right, there you have it. Not an exhaustive list by any means but enough to get you started. Enjoy exploring! And remember that going to Tenerife doesn’t just have to be about topping up your tan.
