Review: GCI’s FirePit Rocker camp chair

Let’s be honest… For avid campers, finding a good chair can be a bit of a pain in the butt. Truth be told, I’ve tried a dozen chairs before I found a few differing styles and makes that complimented my style of camping. The problem for me had always been weighing space and quality versus cost. There are hundreds of camping chair styles, and their features range as widely as their makers. But there’s a beauty to a solid chair, and today I’d like to explore that while I review one of my favorites.
There are basic chairs, folding chairs, rocking chairs, and others with features such as footrests and canopy shades. There are chairs that break down into thin bags, and others that fold up from the middle and lie flat, and for as many differences as camp chairs possess these days, there are just as many with serious faults that can completely fail at the wrong time.

For me, I look for chairs that are comfortable and built to last, and even considering those two simple qualities, it’s not too difficult to weed out the weak from the bunch. In my early travel days, cost was everything, so naturally, I suffered a bit when it came to comfort and longevity of use. Now-a-days, I can pick apart a camp chair in seconds and know if it’s the right fit for me or not. I tend to gravitate toward chairs with thick metal bars and comfortable, yet thick fabrics. I like the chairs that lie flat as opposed to the kind that collapse and fit into bags.

One of my favorite makes is the Firepit Rocker by GCI Outdoor. It is a strong, well-built chair, made for comfort and longevity. The Firepit Rocker is unique in its features, as it doubles as a gentle rocking chair as the back legs provide a rocking motion with steady ease. Thick metal bars frame the chair, suspending a comfortable fabric, complete with an airy opening to allow air to flow against your back – which is a fantastic feature for hot, summer days spent in nature. As far as additional features, the armrests are padded and there’s a padded cup holder hangs from the front right bar. Lastly, another feature I like, which lends itself to the overall style of the chair, is the way the chair breaks down… It folds up flat by pulling upwards on the seat bars. This style of chair is not ideal for backpackers, who value space and weight, but if you are traveling a bit more luxuriously (especially if your campsite is never too far from your vehicle), then the GCI Firepit Rocker might be the perfect chair for you, as well.

I’ve been a fan of GCI’s Rocker series of camp chairs since I first tested the FirePit model a few years ago. I brought it on camping trips with my coworkers, where it elicited friendly and envious teasing like, “Of course the gear editor has a rocking camp chair.” And more than once when I got up to grab a fresh seltzer or beer from the cooler, someone snuck over to claim it in the minute I was gone.
