Road tripping is the best way to see a place

First off, I’d like to state that I LOVE ROAD TRIPS! Road tripping a destination, especially an international place is one of the most exciting, intimate, and interesting things you can do, I think. You can come and go as you please, and you can go with the flow, staying in a place because you met some really great locals, or you can move along if something doesn’t quite feel right. I particularly love road tripping around whole countries, because of several reasons, really – it gives me the freedom to stop wherever I want, whenever I want, as I mentioned already, but as a photographer, that’s an invaluable freedom that I like to take advantage of as much as possible – the other reasons are that I really love to get lost, and if I’m always hopping from bus to taxi to train, I will almost always miss a neat village, or a beautiful landscape feature.
I’ve had the lovely experience of traveling around several different countries along my latest eight-month trek through Europe, Northern Africa, and Iceland. However, there were so many other places that I wish I had more time in, so that I would have been able to see more of it. Unfortunately, I traveled by public transit for most of the first half of my trip, through Spain, Italy, Croatia, Germany, and Switzerland – all of which, I vow to revisit so that I can road trip around each country, with the intent of seeing as much as they have to offer, be it the different towns, landscapes, and people. Places like Spain and France have so many different regions that have their own styles,  cultures, foods, beliefs, and ways of living their lives. Plus, I think it would be so fascinating to be able to showcase an entire country, from one end to the other, through my photographic work.

I’ve road tripped through large parts of the USA, Canada, Scotland, Ireland, and Iceland, and I have to say that Iceland has the most mesmerizing overall beauty of all the list, however Scotland is a close second, for sure. I know the USA and Canada have exceedingly lovely areas as well, and you definitely can’t forget to mention Ireland here, however, I will never forget the amazing experience of traveling around Iceland and Scotland, taking in all of their natural wonderment. The next time I’m back in the UK, I would like to work with the Caravan Company and do Scotland all over again, but also travel through England and Wales, because even though I’ve been to both twice before, I’ve always traveled via the public transport system – I feel like I’m missing so much! I mean, heck, there’s the Lake District, the Peak District, and then there’s all of the gorgeous and rough coastal regions, like Devon and Cornwall.

I really love road trips! Before I became a traveler I road trips a lot around United States. It's knowing the place better and take a closer look of the beautiful sites. Great photos.

Totally agree! Driving gets right into the heart of places. We have a small motorhome that we use in North America and often rent cars to tour Europe. In bigger cities we have found that public transportation is another great way to get a feel for a place.

Yes, in bigger cities I would recommend walking or public transportation.

Since I discovered the magic of road trips, they have become my favourite way of travelling. Am on the road right now, exploring Germany and loving every minute - even when I get lost because I refuse to invest in a satnav. Maybe you'd like to check out my blog at fabiennewolf.com with descriptions and pictures of a road trip around Britain (called 'Reports from the Road'), since it chimes in with your interest. I loved Wales and the Lake District, but Scotland's wild beauty captured my heart ... Here's to the road and many happy miles more!

How do you like Germany? What is favorite part about that destination?

Am finding Germany interesting beyond all expectation! There is so much to see that is of cultural importance, and the cuisine is very tempting, too ... I'm learning so much about history, and because I am personally involved in these discoveries, I find that I remember historical dates and events much better than when they had to be learnt by rote at school. So far, I have visited the palace of Herrenchiemsee, investigated Ludwig II of Bavaria and found out that he was not mad, but the victim of political intrigue; have looked at Oranienbaum and studied the life of a Dutch princess and her influence on this town; am working on a blog post describing my discovery of the truly amazing Prince Leopold in Woerlitz, a pioneer of sustainability far ahead of his (and our) time; and planning to write more posts about my visit to Wittenberg, where Luther began the Reformation, and to Leipzig, where the fall of the wall began ... Well, you did ask! It seems that this road trip is turning into a history tour, and my travel blog is happily following this new tangent. (For some unexplained reason, it is getting a lot of views from Brazil recently - go figure!)

I love the freedom you embody. I dream of a life with these infinite possibilities. It's beautifully intriguing, a good read.
