Taking a look at the perfect briefcase for business travelers

For me, personally, a solid briefcase is imperative for successful business trips. It isn’t about the brand, or how much money it cost, nor if a bag is made of some precious leather. The right bag can help comfort and ease in travel, as well as success in business. At the inception of Eye & Pen, I was a backpacker. And as a backpacker, I was always most concerned with the perfect rucksack, because as a backpacker, I lived out of my pack. So it mattered greatly how much space, what features and the weight of my pack. But as I grow as a writer, into an author, I have become accustomed with the business travel world.

In the modern world, if you are striving to make something greater of yourself, the old adage of ‘dressing the part’ rings true. And so, I’ve taken it to heart. When I travel for business, I will still take a rucksack from time to time, but my business connections won’t know about that pack. Sure, I travel with traditional hardshell luggage cases at times, but a rucksack is a comfortable thing to me. Plus, when I take business trips, I almost always extend my trips so I am able to see the region I’m traveling to. But nowadays, the perfect briefcase can only help the reason for travel.

The perfect briefcase is both a (fashion) statement as well as an assistant. My briefcase assists me in my look and in first impressions, just as much as it helps with organization and safe keeping of my creative works. So finding the right bag is something of an art.

Aesthetically, I prefer leather bags, specifically leathers that have character and marks of the animal that gave its hide for me. On top of that, I look for leathers that have been sourced from animals that had already died, naturally, and not used and abused for the simple creation of a bag. I am a hippie at heart and feel about animals as I feel about Nature; we must treat them both with respect and act in a way that protects, rather than destroys.

For business travelers, luggage and briefcases can vary greatly. They range in size, shape, color, feature, fashion and beyond… And while it’s impossible to cover all of these aspects, I will offer a few words to what I look for. I prefer leather, as I’ve said, and I also look for briefcases that can carry more than the normal document. I need compartments for my laptop, for tablets, business cards, pens and notebooks, and other personal effects. The fit must be comfortable and look right with me, and depending on what business my trip requires, the right bag and its required features may shift dramatically. And if I am forced to travel light, that changes things too. Or if I am traveling for photography, that’s a whole other animal all together.

For me, I like to have the perfect writer’s briefcase; one that goes with any number of outfits, down dressing, and is capable of carrying all of the items listed above. Then, I like to have a briefcase ready for more traditional business trips; something slim and black, so it goes with everything and is easy to travel. Beyond that, I try to make use of my other luggage cases/rucksacks, because how many bags is truly too many for one person. ;-)

If you’re looking for a quality briefcase, the fine folks over at LederMann Leather carry a wide range of quality business luggage. I travel with one of their bags: TheCultured Laptop bag
