The perfect home office setup

As an author, travel writer and photographer, I spend a lot of time on the road. And to be honest, if I spent all of my time abroad, I’d probably go nuts. Because when you live out of suitcases or out of a rucksack, you have few creature comforts, and even fewer personal effects. I spent the better part of a year on the run; nine months to be exact, where I traveled across Europe and Northern Africa, where I lived out of the pack on my back.

So when I can, I always try to schedule stretches of time where I stay at home. And even though I’m home, it is not a vacation for me as my work never ends. When I’m traveling abroad, I work many hours each day on my MacBook Air, but when I’m home, I have quite a different setup. I have an office with a desk with a post-production monitor, several hard drives and bookshelves stuffed full, and I do some of my best writing there. But my favorite space is the living room, where I convert my television into a large workspace.

Working on a large screen from the comforts of my couch offers me the ability to mix up my working hours with entertainment. I’m sure you can understand how valuable it is being able to edit my photography on a much larger screen. It’s amazing how the ability to switch between work and pleasure promotes productivity and creativity. If I find myself stuck, I simply put on a movie or play a game, and while that may sound trivial, it makes all the difference when I am struggling with a concept or the right words.

I use an Apple wireless mouse and a Kanex wireless keyboard to make my job easier. Wires can be the bane to this setup, so it only makes sense to diversify the utilities I use for this specific workspace.

When I work on my novel, I write in my office with a pair of headphones keeping me separated from the outside world, which allows me to get into the zone, and into my character’s heads. But I find the living room office more comfortable for travel writing and photo editing, and for the creation of new ideas, concepts and new approaches.

I can sit six to seven feet from the screen and do some of my best work. My Kanex MultiSync keyboard allows me the ability to write smoothly, by simply sitting its slim board on my lap. I find the Mac keyboards as being equal in quality, but overly priced. The Kanex version keyboard for Mac is a well-built, strong and slim alternative, with similar features. Pairing between several devices is easy, unlike most bluetooth devices, and similarly to the Apple make, the keys are backlit. But even better, the Kanex MultiSync requires no additional batteries, as it has its own rechargeable batter inside.
