Unlikely holidays: 4 bizarre types of tourism around the world

The worldwide economic impact of the tourism industry is undeniable: in 2012, it was reported by the World Travel & Tourism Council that it represented 9% of the overall world economy.
These are big numbers and while most new types of tourism probably aren’t going mainstream anytime soon, people are more and more looking for less traditional ways to travel: discover our top 4 some of the most unlikely ways to discover new places and get inspired (or terrified!).
Cosmetic surgery tourism
Who could have thought pairing plastic surgery and holidays would make the perfect combo? A lot of people apparently as the medical tourism sector is booming and more and more investors are betting big bucks on this unusual holiday trend and looking to develop it further by building these new generation luxury clinics (http://www.juveaaesthetics.com/dermal-fillers-harley-street-london/) all over the world, that combine plastic surgery and a VIP holiday setting. Some of the most popular spots include Venezuela, Brazil and Asia and you can book online through a cluster of newly specialised companies for the full holiday + makeover package at incredibly low prices.
2. Grave tourism
It may sound a little sinister at first sight, but gravesite tourism has been around for years. It involves a flock of people travelling from tombstone to tombstone in order to pay their homage to their deceased idol(s). Some companies now specialised in the matter, like the Cemetery Club in London that runs tours around the capital’s graveyards for some unforgettable holiday cheer.
3.  Space tourism
Unbelievably enough, one of the biggest trend in the space industry right now is geared towards space tourism. Companies such as The Space Tourism Society and Enter Space Adventures are hoping to develop the space travel concept. It’s now possible to get yourself booked on a suborbital space flight, flying a hundred times higher than traditional air flights and with a little extra fee of $300 000 million, you can even one day hope to get on board a flight around the moon.
4. Disaster tourism
For some, visiting the site of a major disaster isn’t a gloomy affair but it is their way to witness and get a better sense of whatever happened. This type of tourism has also been dubbed “dark tourism” and there has understandingly been a fair amount of controversy around it: after Katrina’s hurricane in 2005, when New Orleans became literally plagued with tour companies offering such services and arguably profiting from the tragedy, New Orleans inhabitants had to take a stand against it in order to make it stop.
On the other hand, some tour companies can have a positive impact on the neighboring communities if it is dealt with responsibly. The Reality Tours and Travel for instance in Mumbai, is a slum tour that aims to educate tourists on the living conditions of the population in the area while investing 80% of all profits into the community. It was recently awarded a responsible tourism award and is definitely to be hold as a good example of what disaster tourism could and should be.
