It's no secret that Greece is a gorgeous destination for a summer holiday - just thinking about it I can almost feel the warmth of the sun on my skin and the sand between my toes. But, there's more to going on a summer break in Greece than good weather and beaches (though those are important too!). So, I've compiled a list of great places to visit in the next few months that offer the all-important sunshine and plenty else besides.
I must confess that I find it very hard to choose between the below, and I think that if you can visit more than one in a single trip, it's definitely worth it. Cruises are probably the simplest way to do so and they don't necessarily need to cost the Earth.
Crete
Best for: Walks, history and beaches
The first place on my list is the largest of the Greek islands, Crete. There are lots of things that appeal to me about Crete, in particular its fantastic walking routes and impressive historical attractions.
Let's start with the former. By visiting Crete, you can hike through some truly awe-inspiring landscapes. The best, in my opinion, is the vast Samaria Gorge. This can be tackled on long guided walks and, as it can be quite tricky, is best for experienced walkers. While it definitely takes some effort to complete, the weird and wonderful rock formations you can see along the way make it well worth it.
In terms of historical attractions, Knossos is the island's crowning glory. Explore the ruins of this ancient palace to discover some of the island's Minoan past. If you can, I'd recommend getting here quite early in the day, just because it's a popular tourist attraction and so can get fairly crowded.
Santorini
Best for: Romance, scenery and beaches
Next up we have Santorini, which is one of the Cyclades Islands. I always think Santorini is a destination that has a real sense of magic and romance about it, with the island's scenery being nothing short of stunning.
One of the great things about coming here is that the buildings are almost as beautiful as the volcanic landscape, with blue-domed churches and charming whitewashed houses sprinkled prettily along the coastline - something that makes approaching Santorini by boat all the more enjoyable. If you do come here, make sure you head to the little village of Oia to watch the wonderful sunset - you won't be disappointed.
Athens
Best for: Discovering ancient wonders
Athens is deservedly one of Greece's most famous destinations. As you no doubt know, this is largely because it's home to some of the most incredible wonders of the ancient world, which you can see right in the centre of the city at the Acropolis.
Among the most important buildings to tower over the modern metropolis here are the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. It's also well worth exploring the National Archaeological Museum of Athens during your stay, where you can peruse some of the finest archaeological discoveries from all around Greece.
Just as a quick note, there's much more to enjoy in Athens than historical sites alone. The city also has a really vibrant, modern side with its brilliant bars, restaurants and art galleries. The National Art Gallery, for example, is an absolutely excellent place to see some Greek art across a range of eras and styles. Plus, it also regularly hosts international exhibitions.
