The UK’s capital city is set to become one of the world’s top technology hubs and is expected to contribute £12 billion towards the national economy over the next decade – but is that enough to make it the next tech capital of the world?
Spreading technological breakthroughs across the country
Numerous areas in the UK are positioning themselves as global leaders in the technology industry with London an obvious contender for this type of growth. For those seeking to get in on the action, there are numerous family homes and retirement flats for sale around the capital so that you can be based as close as possible to the latest technology companies.

There is a sense of urgency for those that want to be part of the new wave of technology businesses that are developing across the UK. Most of these new businesses are in London, but other cities across the country are becoming more involved in financial, gaming and microchip technologies.

Cambridge employs over 53, 000 people and produces 90% of the world’s smartphone power chips, for example, while London employs 88,000 in its high-tech companies

Helping the UK keep on track
Many competing new tech start up companies have been able to gain access to government funding from the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), which allocates funds to new innovative companies around the country.

This process has been criticised in the past but has recently been sped up with the help of The Cambridge Angels. Working in conjunction with London’s technology companies and Cambridge entrepreneurs, this investment group has helped establish a viable supply chain between Cambridge and London.

Other technology capitals
Across the globe everyone wants to be the biggest and the best when it comes to the Internet and electronics. Many think of California as the leader, but there are various other cities that are showing huge developments in the IT sector and are on their way to becoming the new ‘Silicon Valley.’

The Israeli city of Tel Aviv is known as the ‘Silicon Wadi’ (Silicon Valley) and Google has recently opened a shop there which provides a shared work environment for new developers and is free to use.

Other centres of excellence include Hong Kong and Washington D.C.

Keeping up with the changes
As the world constantly changes and modern societies rely more than ever on the Internet and computers, it’s important that the infrastructure of towns and cities are kept up to date.

London Mayor Boris Johnson recently stated that “for me, London’s genius is in its ability to absorb the world’s talent and export its ideas. It fuses art and science.”

The mayor stated that London’s growth as a centre of technological innovation was one of the reasons why Facebook had chosen London as the new centre for the firm’s engineering team.

Boris is confident that London will continue to emerge as the world’s tech capital - what about you?

Most people do not realize is that Africa is gaining ground in many sectors. Technology, industry, farming, tourism etc., are all part of what makes Africa a great place to visit and do business. So personally I think Africa should be on the list of new tech places to keep an eye on. Great blog post and really nice site....lets plan a trip to Africa together.
