The strength of the greenback and low gas prices mean a record number of Americans will travel in 2015. As more of us explore the country and the world, these innovative companies are at the cutting edge.
Airbnb Lets Travelers Live Like Locals

Before Airbnb's 2008 launch, only couch surfers looking for a cheap vacation would consider staying in someone else's home. But the innovative accommodation site has taken the concept to the mainstream.

The site allows tourists to book rooms in local homes so they can enjoy a more authentic travel experience. Properties range from modest dwellings to more lavish homes, so there's something to suit all tastes and budgets. In fact, with more than 800,000 listings worldwide, Airbnb has more properties than any hotel chain on the planet.

Airbnb's users get more than just a room. They enjoy conversations with their hosts and the benefit of their recommendations for the local area. Facilities like kitchens and laundry are also more accessible than at many commercial accommodation options.

Uber Shakes Up the Transportation Industry

Ride-sharing service Uber is muscling in on the territory of traditional taxi firms, providing a friendly and efficient way to travel that tourists love. Uber drivers use their own cars to transport passengers for a fee. Consumers can book a car, track its progress, and then rate their driver using the Uber app.

Uber fans insist the service is friendlier, cleaner, and more efficient than using a taxi. It's also more affordable, especially when Uber runs discount promotions. Uber's proved so popular it's spread from its native San Francisco across the United States. You'll also find Uber in 54 foreign markets including Australia, the United Kingdom, India, and South Africa. In San Francisco, Uber's been so well received that it's helped contribute to a 65 percent decrease in average trips per taxi.

EatWith Pioneers Peer-to-Peer Dining

Peer-to-peer dining has been called one of the year's biggest travel trends. Several sites have tried to capitalize on it, but EatWith was the first and it continues to set the standard.

It connects diners keen to experience authentic local meals with dinner party hosts in more than 160 cities across the globe. The events allow EatWith users to connect with their local hosts and the passionate foodies around the table. Hosts and guests can rate one another to ensure quality peer-to-peer dining experiences.

Roamer Puts an End to Roaming Charges

Bill shock from high data roaming charges was a sure way to bring anyone back to reality after a vacation abroad. Roamer puts an end to this stress and allows tourists to breathe easier on their international travels.

The free app allows users to make and receive calls using their regular phone number while traveling abroad without paying those pesky roaming fees. Consumers can also link their number to a local SIM for cheap calls and data. Roamer's relatively new, but with promised savings of up to 97 percent on international roaming it could soon change the way tech lovers travel.

Just like so many industries, the travel sector is in a state of flux. These innovative companies are at the forefront of the modern travel revolution.
