It’s said that India is a place that is different for each and every traveler. It’s also said that you will love it or you will hate it, rarely is there a middle ground. India is a destination that ranges in differences and extremes, and is different for each person – but if you keep an open mind, India can be exactly what you need, whether it’s change, humbling, understanding or enlightenment.
India is known as one of the most exotic countries in the world, for good reason. It features a wide range of brilliant landscape, interesting history, and sprawling, complex cities, which showcase a mix of colors and smells, and an appreciation for life, family, and faith, that is embodied in all Indian people, and is evident in everyday life. There’s a reason it’s called the ‘Land of A Thousand Colors.’ With all of that said, it’s clear that every traveler and every person curious about the varieties of life ought to visit India at least once in their lives.

But when you decide to go to India, if you want to enjoy it as much as possible and not get surprised at some of the customs, habits, climate, etc. You have to know some of the things about the country, of course. So, here are seven important points you should know before traveling to India:

1. All passports must be valid for six months following your arrival, and your visa has to be processed ahead of time, prior to your arrival. It’s one of the most important things you have to keep in mind when planning your trip to India.

2. Indian currency is the rupee – a dollar is a little over 60 rupees at the moment. It’s important to understand that life in India is at a completely different level than you might be used to in Western societies, as the standard of living can be viewed as extreme poverty. For example: Regarding your accommodations, you can find hostels in India at very affordable price, which can make traveling in the country a totally different experience than you may be used to, let alone all of the cultural, culinary, and religious differences.

3. Another important aspect of planning for your trip to India, is to pack comfortable clothes, because a lot of the conditions can range from all different types of extremes – cotton and linen clothing is usually recommended.

4. The best season to visit India is in the winter, from December to January, because the temperature ranges between 15-20ºC (59-68ºF), although it can be a whole lot chillier at night, but that also depends what part of India you will be visiting.

5. In India, the people drive on the left side of the road, so if you’re from the UK or Australia, it will feel like you’re at home – well, almost.

6. Drinking bottled water is the safest option for international travelers, as it will ensure that you have the best chances of avoiding any sort of stomach issues/viruses.

7. A calm attitude can prevail in India, so even when it feels like you’re in the worst situation possible at the worst time ever, try to remain calm, and to trust in humanity. Even though sometimes India may feel like a scary place to an outsider, it’s also full of some of the most humble and loving people the world has to offer.
