For decades, the wilderness camper was forced to carry steel and ceramic cups, which are both heavy as well as a pain because they create such a burden for those who venture far from their vehicle. There’s something amazing about adventuring out into a wide wilderness area that’s remained untouched, so that you go far enough out to prevent the sound or sight of humanity and civilization. When you get so far out into what’s left of the natural world, to where you can no longer hear cars, or planes, or see or smell the destruction humanity as wrought, then you’re left with a truly authentic experience. Even if it’s down to just you and the wind, and the smell of the wild world; you can still find that peace that used to exist everywhere in nature, on earth.
Finding a place so far out that I am alone with my thoughts and without distraction has become a passionate objective in my travels this summer, and so the intricacies of camping in this fashion have helped me hone my packing list and cut down on the material ‘things’ that had been more of a burden than a luxury. I’ve had to redefine what’s important for trips such as these, because being put in a survival situation is more probable than is the need of such trifle materials. I bring a loner tent, a small sleeping bag, and a rucksack packed with clothes, knives, my fire-starting kit and only other basics.
One of the things that went first was the sets of steel cups, that look great and work fine, but do demand a lot of space and weight. A product that recently cropped up, revolutionizing the way I camp and eat is the Finland-based company Kupilka. Kupilka specializes in producing outdoor dishes, cutlery and knives that are made out of their own biomaterial, that feels and acts a lot like plastic, but is environmentally safe and responsible. Their products are durable and quite hard for being made in such a way, which took me by surprise at first.
The Kupilka 37 is a 2-in-1 drinking vessel that is a hybrid between a soup cup and a tea cup, which makes it a fantastic all-in-1 sort of dish, which allows me to literally carry just one, instead of multiple items. The Kupilka line can withstand boiling hot water, as well as sub-zero temperatures (down to -30C), and can be washed by hand in the wild or even in dishwashers at home. They are very lightweight, compared to their steel and ceramic counterparts, and come finished with its own stylish marbling design, which is natural to the process, rather than added as a coating after production. Overall, I found the Kupilka line for outdoor dishware and cutlery to be the perfect fix for my weight issues. But even more important is the fact that Kupilka managed to create a biological plastic, which I hope catches on worldwide.
