Boy, oh boy, did I have a bad time in Barcelona… It was one of my earliest trips, and I had drank the tap water. I know, I know, what was I thinking. Well, I had judged the quality of Barcelona’s water treatment facilities as being on par with how beautiful the city was. Unfortunately, I was deeply wrong, and I suffered for it, for the following three weeks as I toured the rest of Spain. I could never quite shake the cough or the green snot that seemed to follow me around and haunt me. Somedays were better than others while I finished backpacking Spain, but I will never forget my water fiasco.
Ever since, I’ve invested in bottled water, bottles with their own filters, the life straw, and a large filtering system at home. But for any backpacker who’s trying to save a few bucks, rather than buying a large bottle of water every few hours, there wasn’t a lot of options when backpacking was the only kind of travel I knew. Thankfully, I think I’ve got the perfect solution… And it works for pets too.
Sure, all the other options I mentioned are useful, particularly if you’re in the wilderness and you have a life straw in your pack, but those sorts of options are either expensive, bulky or not possible for backpackers. The option I’ve found and use now is the GoPure Pod’s by PuriBloc.
The GoPure Pods are these cute, little, white pods that look like enlarged pills (a little over an inch long) with open ridges that purify the water through its inner ceramic filter. The filter is made of food grade minerals of biogenic origin which attracts and absorbs impurities, balances pH and releases valuable trace minerals. It can simply be dropped into any water bottle, glass, pitcher or even coffee maker, and it will do its job. Each pod can work continuously for six months or up to 2,000 refills (of potable water).
I found the pods to work pretty well. I tested it with water at home and abroad in several locations, including campsite water (which can be as disastrous as any found in other countries), and the water was drinkable, even tasted better. There’s a bit of rust in my own well water at home and it helped tremendously.
Another neat thing is they offer another pod system for pets… It’s the same pod as for humans, but with a nifty suction cup plate which secures the pod to the bottom of most pet bowls. So if you were concerns that your pet might find the pod as being some tasty treat, they already thought of that (thankfully). My dog Cali was a little apprehensive at first, but she came around!
