A Relaxing Day Spent Along the River

Normally, I travel as a backpacker or wilderness camper, but the other day I thought I ought to mix up my natural experience. I thought about heading for the coast to try out the beach life, even though my next beach trip isn’t coming up for another four-to-five months. But then it occurred to me that here in Ohio, I have a lot of choices along the rivers, where I can bird watch, relax and be alone, but of course for the occasional kayaker who ventures down the river with beers in hand. So, with a six pack of beer in my own, and my Ostrich chair packed in my trunk, I made my way along backcountry roads to a particularly rural section of the Walhonding river.
I wandered the back roads, following the meandering river, over bridges and past a towering dam, until I found the perfect place for some peace and quiet. There were no people, or houses, only the fresh-tilled earth of corn and bean fields. Trees gathered thick all along the river, but I found a place with the perfect outlook where the river split and that’s where I setup my beach chair. I stretched out the footrest and lowered it into a relaxed position, and I just sat back. I pulled a pair of binoculars from my daypack, then cracked open a beer, and for what seemed like hours, I took in the scene.

I watched the hawks soar overhead, and I exchanged pleasantries with a couple paddling their way down the river. But the most exciting part was when I finally spotted an bald eagle’s nest through the trees. Having the chance to see and try to understand a day in the life of an eagle is an awe inspiring experience. The mother would take off and come back not long after with food for her baby chicks. If I strained, I could hear their cries. With the binos pressed to my face, I could make out their faint traces of movement, but it was the adult eagles that put on a show for me. There’s just something amazing about eagle watching that gave me hope for our world, for the survival of life itself, because if an eagle’s nest can survive, we have a reason to work toward saving the planet.

In my short story narrative above, I mentioned using my ‘Ostrich chair,’ so I thought it would be nice to talk a little more about this chair, because it is a versatile piece of outdoor furniture that deserves to be featured. The Ostrich 3N1 Beach Chair by Deltess is a multi-positional beach chair in its design, but it can be used anywhere. The chair folds down into a laying position parallel to the ground, and even has a hidden hole to fit your face down into, just in case sunbathing is your thing. Padded pillows cover the hole and add an arch to the user’s middle back region, while the footrest pulls out, allowing for a number of great positions.

The Ostrich chair’s frame is made of a metal piping, while the arm rests are a nice finished wood, with a plastic cup holder. It’s a quality chair, made for avid beach goers, but as a not-so-avid beach goer, I found it to be a great chair for lounging anywhere, even along a river in Ohio. My only criticism is that it can be difficult to maneuver the chair as it folds down nicely, but is still a large chair. So I probably would opt to leave it at home when I go on my next camp trip. But overall, I was impressed with how many positions were built into the design of the Ostrich chair.
