Wyoming’s Devil’s Tower is among the more unusual natural formations in the American west. The tower juts up and out of the ground like an ancient volcano with rippled walls, which can be seen for miles. Although it’s visited by tourists and includes a visitor’s center, it is a very sacred place for Native Americans and when you walk around it, you can find their tobacco prayer ties wrapped around countless trees at the base of the tower.
When driving around the tower, you can end up taking another turn and you will find yourself at the Devil’s Tower Lodge, owned by adventurer and seasoned climber, Frank Sanders. Frank is an accomplished and very interesting person, with a positive outlook and stories for days. My wife Leah and I stayed one night at his lovely accommodation in September 2019 on our way to Yellowstone. We were blessed to be able to experience the lodge’s newest room addition, The Grand, which is a 700 square feet room with a stunning view of Devil’s Tower.
The Grand boasts two beds, a private bathroom with mosaic tile and a seriously awesome rain shower with two shower heads and plenty of room for two to shower together and to move around with ease. There’s also a wood burner in the room, and each guest joins together at a family style breakfast that really hit the spot before our long drive across the state. But the absolute best part of The Grand is the view. Two enormous windows invite stargazers by night and tower gazers by day, as the tower fills the scene like a painting.
