Travel yields some of the coolest experiences modern life can offer. Over my decade of travel writing, I’ve had the pleasure and opportunity to stay a night in a castle in Ireland, in a gypsy camp in Slovenia, in a tent at the base of the Swiss Alps, in a remote cabin in Iceland, and now, I’ve stayed in a 1909-themed club dining train car in Minnesota. Sometimes the place you stay can add tremendously to the experience, so why not give it some extra thought when you’re booking your next trip? I always do, for good reason.
Along my recent trip out west with my wife Leah, we spent time in Wyoming at Devil’s Tower, Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone before moving north to Glacier, Montana. We had the time of our life, seeing some of the most unique and breathtaking landscapes nature has to offer, and were stuck with back-to-back 15-hour drives. But we didn’t want the trip to end, so we stayed at the Whistle Stop Bed and Breakfast in NY Mills, Minnesota after our first hellacious drive.
The Whistle Stop B&B is one of the most unique and fun places I’ve ever stayed, because our room was an entire period-themed train car from 1909 that was retired in the 1960’s. The Palace Car is beautiful and the decor is very detailed to the time, with stunning memorabilia and decor that brought to life what it was like to travel across the country in the early 1900s. There are 1800s dining menus, coal bed heater, time period posters, and so much more. The mood sets you back over 100 years and its so well done that I can’t think of a constructive criticism that could push this fine lodging experience to the next level. It’s already there and totally unlike anything I’ve seen outside of a museum.
The Palace Car amenities include double whirlpool private bath, A/C and ceiling fans, queen size bed, free WIFI, and a small kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave. There’s no cable TV, but there is a DVD/VCR, but to be honest, when you’re staying in a place like that, it’s a blessing to be cut off from the constant racket of the talking heads on the news. Without cable TV, the mood is preserved. Other features include a free-standing fireplace, floral carpeting, mahogany paneling and breakfast delivered to the dining area of the car. It’s an awesome spot and can’t be recommended enough!
