Essential oils have been used for thousands of years, in steam baths, Tantric rituals, and spiritual meditation, along with being applied as natural medicines. An essential oil is are concentrated oils that come from plants, flowers, herbs, trees, roots and other organic living materials, which when inhaled via aromatherapy, or used topically, can heal*, soothe ailments and can assist in a myriad of issues. With aromatherapy, you can either use a diffuser device or simply use as a therapeutic aroma which can then chance your emotional and mental well-being, as well as release stress, relax the body and uplift the spirit.

Almost all of the hair care, body washes, and other body care products come loaded with additives and chemicals that fill our bodies with toxins, and have a greater negative effect with prolonged use, which is why there’s been such an upsurge in organic and natural products on the market. With the popularity of essential oils, anyone can make their own at home, too, which I find to be especially exciting. Not only can you create a pure, organic concoction that does what you need and more, you can blend the natural properties of essential oils with carrier oils, butters and waxes so that you’re receiving a specialized and focused treatment for hundreds applications.

Essential oils can now be found available in grocery stores, department stores and in just about any natural store, but one plant you likely won’t find is cannabis essential oil. I recently teamed up with Kushed, who specializes in aromatherapy candles and essential oil blends with cannabis oil as its mainstay. They use pure therapeutic grade cannabis oil, which was 100% organically grown in the sunny fields of France and steam distilled. When working with essential oils, it’s always important how confident you are in the quality of the oils, because some companies like to dress up their oils with additives, and others simply fake it. Kushed is a good one.

Kushed suggests using their cannabis essential oil blends in bath water, diffusers or vaporizers, or by simply placing a drop or two in with your pillows and cushions, but you can also use as a massage oil, or as a topical, but it is important that you use carrier oils to diffuse the essential oil; because when applied directly, the oil will be strong and can cause irritation for some. Here is the caution statement from Kushed: “All essential oils are concentrated extracts, and should be used in modest amounts. dilution with a carrier oil is recommended before applying to the skin. Test for skin sensitivity before use. If you are pregnant, nursing or under a doctors care consult you physician.. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears and sensitive areas. Keep away from children. Do not take internally unless working with a qualified and expert practitioner. For educational purposes only. This information has not been evaluated by the food and drug administration.”

Kushed sent over their cannabis essential oil, and a few of their blends like Tune In, Relax, and Revive. Each as their own specialties and specific uses. The straight cannabis oil is not a THC concentrate, so don’t worry about ‘getting high,’ but it is helpful with anxiety, calmness, and relaxing the central nervous system. It has a powerful, earth and herbal scent that I do indeed find relaxing. The Tune In is an ancient biblical blend originally reserved for holy men, which mixes myrrh, cassia, cinnamon and cannabis to provide a spiritual boost and soothing massage application that contains anti-inflammatory properties. They suggest joining Tune In with warmed olive oil and then massaged; and I must confess that it is perfect for travelers with sore feet. Tune In is intoxicating with its subtle cannabis scent and overwhelmingly beautiful cinnamon aroma.

The Relax blend marries some of my absolute favorite scents in all the world: lavender, sweet orange, ylang ylang and cannabis. Lavender always delivers an immediate intoxicating and relaxing effect, while sweet orange brings an uplifting quality. Try the Relax blend in a hot bath or on your pillow; some folks find it especially helpful for jet lag. I like to take it with me on trips to simply breathe in the aroma while I meditate to ease anxiety and to relax tension. Kushed’s Revive blend is a bright, uplifting and citrusy mix of lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint and cannabis. They suggest using it in the shower to kick start the day. I found it most powerful for an energetic uplifting feeling that helps to clear my mind and assist with mental and emotional balance. Overall, I’m a big fan of Kushed’s essential oils and often use them on trips and to get me through the everyday troubles of modern life.
