Don’t Avoid Winter Camping: Dive In All the Way with MSR Gear

The scene was vivid, yet pale, and all around me the harshness of winter had turned the usually thriving forest into a barren landscape of nothing animate but myself. Windswept snow clung to boulders and tree trunks, and ice hung low on their heavy branches. Sweet pine and woodland scent hung in the crisp air as I made my way deeper into the wilderness. It was deeper than I had anticipated, but I was managing like a well worn donkey with a carrot dangling in front of my face. So I slogged on through the bitter cold, mustering enough in me to force another step forward. And another, and another.

Frost had frozen to what remained of the grass beneath the carpet of snow, and it crackled beneath the tread of my Keen Targhee boots. I went on like this, slow but steady, for what seemed like days. The only thing keeping me up were them boots.

Humans are having a drastic and destructive effect on all of life, but what’s more puzzling than how we did it, is how we are treating ourselves. Our food is genetically modified, filled with chemicals, toxins and additives, and our medications are often more harmful, causing more side effects that can be tremendously worse than the originally intended ailment.

You haven't experienced all that Nature has to offer until you’ve met all of her sides. That includes exploring and experiencing winter, as winter is a time when most folks choose to stay indoors, to avoid the cold weather, the snow, and to simply hibernate the season away. However, for me, it’s a mixture of extremes. I do tend to hibernate for much of the holidays, spending time with family, friends and loved ones, yet I also try to always plan a trip that takes me out into the winter wilderness. No, it’s not because I’m mad, crazed or delusional, but mainly because I find it extremely peaceful.
