Time spent in the great outdoors means a moment is never wasted. It can be difficult to explain, but there’s something like a sensation of belonging and peace that comes with time spent in the forest. Blame the way modern life has transformed us all into worker bees, packed tight in cities, where a tree is rare but the night sky is even more scarce. The way we live, where we wake up, goto work, come home too tired to care about much of anything, then back to bed only to repeat this process all over again, has taken its toll on all of humanity, because now we’re farther away from that which we came from.

If you are planning to visit Canada and you have never experienced winter in your life, then you may want to consider sending in your visa application forms for filling the Canada ETA and delay your trip further until the winter is over. Experiencing winter in Canada means that you will need to forge a new friendship with snow boots, lots of layers, and snow pants which will be vital for keeping you warm during the bone-chilling cold.
Stay healthy on the open road
Nothing says freedom, summer or extended vacation like a trip along the open road, whether that’s at home or travelling around your favourite continent. The classic road trip is a staple of American culture; grabbing a few friends and hitting the dusty roads in a beaten up old car is probably the epitome of it! These days “road trips” can include backpacking around Southeast Asia, or train-hopping around Europe, but whatever the method of transportation, extended trips like these are truly life-enriching. With the winds of a new season creeping in like the tendril fingers of death, winter is approaching and the leaves are changing, and the people are beginning to stay indoors. And while many tend to avoid the cold and the cold, there are fair few of us who venture out into the natural world to experience one of its many personalities. Without nature, I am nothing. That’s especially true in winter time, because Seasonal Affective Disorder makes me feel foggy, lost, unhappy, stale and disparaging, so it’s important to stay grounded with regular exploration of the wilder areas of the world.
When you find yourself in a funk, one that has prolonged for years, and every time you look yourself in the mirror, if you feel blah, or meh, or simply unenthused, it may be time for some active changes. That’s the sort of feeling I had this past year. I was tired of the short beard, the steel earrings I’ve had since I was in my late teens, and my overall look. It’s easy to get too comfortable, to get into a routine, because modern life simply is that way at times. You get up, you get ready and goto work, you come home and you’re too tired to care about much else. It’s no way to live. And stale is no way to be.
