Attraction Feature: The MUTATED! Escape Game by Trapped Columbus, Ohio

In the world of attractions, the sky is the limit. I’ve raced go-carts, fueled by adrenaline and competition. I’ve acted as one of the fallen Titanic passengers, getting a glimpse of what it may have been like. I’ve faced my fears and tackled class-4 rapids. I’ve even gone through one of those super intense midnight horror houses, where actors are trained to chase you with chainsaws. But nothing pushed my logic like Trapped Columbus’ MUTATED! A New Strain escape game in Columbus, Ohio.

Escape games are becoming all the rage across the country, because they intertwine mind games with team building and intensity theater; well, some do the theater aspect better than others. Trapped Columbus is one of a few escape games establishments that regularly employ live actors within the game. This addition ramps up the intensity and story dynamic of the games, which only adds to the fun.

Trapped Columbus describes itself as Central Ohio’s only interactive theater that specializes in escape games. There are three different immersive escapes, each with their own theme and storyline. You’re basically locked in a room with friends or strangers, and must rely on your wits to escape within the time limit. What makes Trapped Columbus unique is the actors, the theme, and the non-linear puzzle design of each experience, making different minds come together to figure a way out. Most of the experiences have less than a 38% success rate.

My buddy Matt and I recently experienced the MUTATED! escape game at Trapped Columbus, and I have to say that it was quite interesting. We had fun, but there were some trying moments as well. Immediately when you walk in, you are greeted with a scene of flickering lights, blood, and thematic pieces strewn throughout the room. A zombie awakens from the corner and comes running at you full-force. Sometimes, the zombie would slam on something really loudly and jar you back to the reality you’re facing for the time increment of one hour. Other times, the zombie would walk away slowly, working on freeing one of her arms that will later catch you if you’re not paying attention to her, and when she sees you’re not watching her, she comes running to scare the shit out of you. Once you’re touched, you’re infected, and you have to sit out.

The puzzle aspect of the game was fun, and interesting, but difficult, especially at first, considering if you’ve never done one of these games, you have to take some time to get your wits about you because it can be difficult to gather all of the pieces and to figure out how to unlock the locks and safe. Once you find four ingredients within the room that can be used to cure the disease, then you can be let out. Sadly, our team failed, but we were mere minutes away from cracking the final code. The most frustrating part about the experience is that there’s a total of eight people in the room, and many of them simply did not try and they stood in the way. When a zombie is reaching within inches of you, it can be frustrating. I think if Trapped Columbus limited it to six people per room, then it would have greatly improved the experience. But honestly, overall it is something I am glad I had the chance to experience, and will gladly do again.
