Kennebunkport is a fashionable, quaint and charming town, nestled along the rocky coast just south of Portland. The coastal town is home of the Rachel Carson national Wildlife Preserve, and is known for its long sandy beaches, rocky coastline, and for its history (dating back to 1653). After experiencing the beaches, and the local wildlife, it’s customary for visitors to stroll the small town shops and boutiques, and then to stop at one of Kennebunkport’s many fine restaurants.

On our honeymoon in Maine, Leah and I were blessed with the opportunity to experience some of Maine’s premier cuisine at the Hurricane Restaurant in Kennebunkport, Maine. But first we checked into our bed and breakfast at the lovely 1802 House, located on 15 Locke Street. The 1802 House Bed and Breakfast Inn offers a home away from home feel, with some of the nicest innkeepers I’ve had the pleasure of meeting along my travels. This historic Colonial inn is near the sea and within a 5-minute walk to downtown Kennebunkport, yet offers a wonderful, peaceful atmosphere that I found to be perfect for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Portland, and away from the tourists of downtown.

The grounds of the 1802 House are lovingly manicured with colorful gardens, towering pines and is backed by the Cape Arundel Golf Course. Once you walk in, you’re greeted with a common space with a wood burner and a place to enjoy coffee and tea. The house is elegant and very aesthetically pleasing, with every detail thoughtfully provided for by Teri and her wonderful staff. The inn is a member of the Select Registry Distinguished Inns of North America, and has been awarded the TripAdvisor.com Certificate of Excellence, as well as rated as a BedandBreakfast.com Diamond Collection property; and that standard is evident throughout the house and in every room.

Leah and I stayed in the Windsor guest room, which was recorded in purple, greens and golds, which had views overlooking the gardens. Our room felt private, being at the end of the front of the house, where we noticed little to no noise from guests or from the road. It was a private and romantic experience that we will cherish forever. The Windsor had a queen-size poster bed, a sitting area with a loveseat, a Colonial brick fireplace, and a huge spa tub with shower in the attached private bath. The spa tub was an unexpected delight, because its size and versatility, and since you can transition between a shower, a bath and a jacuzzi experience, it became a highlight of our stay.

The 1802 House has six guest rooms, each with their own flat-screen TVs, audio docking stations, complimentary WI-FI and other comforting amenities. Every morning, Teri and her staff serve a fresh 3-course gourmet breakfast that comprises of local and organic ingredients. For our breakfast, we enjoyed a spinach, feta and egg keish that was bursting with flavor. On top of that, the inn offers fresh baked cookies, hot and cold beverages and other treats each afternoon. They really make you feel at home.
