There are times on my travels that a place surprises you, and I had that pleasurable experience at Burnap’s Bed & Breakfast and Beyond. This family-owned B&B is the definition of a hidden gem, located in Sodus, New York, within a few miles of Lake Ontario. This grand Victorian mansion was built in 1876 and has been restored to much of its original glory by the Burnap family, who now run it as a versatile accommodation and events center.

The Burnap family also owns a neighboring fruit farm and fresh food market that is a must stop when in Sodus, because they have just about everything you could want that is fresh and organic; from fresh berries to apples to pies, as well as lunch and dinner, they have it all. One of the characteristics that makes Burnap’s B&B so majestic and romantic is that there are fruit trees about as far as you can see. Sitting on the balcony of our Liberty room offered us a sight of the lake in the distance, while the sun set over the vineyards, as if we were living the perfect setting in a painting.

The Victorian house is located on 120 acres of orchards and vineyards, and has been restored with many of its original pieces. The B&B offers four grand bedrooms, each with their own theme that works beautifully in preserving the history of the house and the interests of its original owners. Burnap's is a living time capsule of history, elegance, and comfort that few B&Bs fully achieve. Leah and I stayed in the Liberty room, which had a feminine theme as it was the original lady’s bed and bath. The Liberty room offers a balcony with gorgeous views of the vineyards and gardens, and was a very memorable way to end our honeymoon.

Burnap’s has an in-house chef employed, who is passionate about his cooking, which comes through each and every bite. We enjoyed a soft fruit bread with berries cooked into the batter, a plate of fresh fruits like mango and cantaloupe, grapes and strawberries, a homemade corned beef hash, as well as a lovely Belgian waffle that was topped with fresh fruit, all with fresh orange juice. Every dish is immaculately displayed and every bite was delectable, and was the best breakfast we had on our honeymoon trip to Maine and back.
