There is an art to running a bed and breakfast, and Michael and Kevin, the owners of Ira Allen House, have certainly figured it out and have wielded their creative powers to create a one of a kind experience in Vermont. Nestled beside Green Mountain National Forest, the Ira Allen House is full of surprises, from an expanse of beautiful and natural grounds worth exploring to a whole lot of history and stories that are sure to interest just about anybody. The house itself is old, from 1779, and it shows, but it’s also been dearly cared for.
What I found to be so unique was that many of the original fixtures, uneven floors and structure seem to be original, while the inside is decked out in a comfortable and homey decor that is both rich in history and beauty. The grounds are stunning, with huge trees that are hundreds of years old, flower gardens, vegetable gardens, and natural waterways that can be explored or simply enjoyed as a respite from the modern world.
Michael and Kevin were gracious hosts, who were infectiously nice, happy and peppy, and are fantastic cooks. They value what makes B&Bs such a draw, the local history and the local food. Their breakfast was wonderful, a strawberry parfait with local berries, local yogurt and homemade granola, which was followed by some of the most scrumptious local buttermilk pancakes with fresh cut apple inside, topped with fresh local Vermont maple syrup and perhaps the best bacon I’ve ever had in my life; and I’ve consumed my more than fair share of bacon, so that’s saying something.
