B&B Feature: Maynard’s in Maine, Rockwood, Maine

Open all year round, Maynard’s in Maine has become a staple of inland Maine by providing wonderful cabin rentals along with a fantastic family style restaurant. Nestled in Rockwood, sitting along the Moose River, Maynard’s is in the perfect placement for anyone who wants to experience Moosehead Lake, the mountains, and the wilderness, or simply look for moose. While Maine is ravaged by tough winters every year, Maynard’s remains open, with hunting, boating, hiking, and other outdoor opportunities right there or conveniently close by. They even have their own personal docks and boats that can be rented, too; AND they will fry up your catch of the day, upon request. How cool is that?!

Maynard’s in Maine has a variety of private cabins in all shapes and sizes, with some units that come with kitchens, though, there’s little need of cooking considering how good their restaurant is. Each cabin has a rustic charm with a simplistic comfort that I found to be a lovely change from the hustling and bustling corporate hotel approach. The cabins may not have TVs in most of them, or WIFI (but it is available in the main building and restaurant), but to me, being technologically connected person in all other aspects of my life, I found the respite to be exactly what I needed. To get out and away is the best remedy for the stresses and anxieties of the modern world, and Maynard’s provides that for its visitors and friends. Maynard’s in Maine has 13 cabins, eight that are available with meals provided and five that offer daily housekeeping only.

I had the pleasure of staying for two nights in the Birch cabin, which had a nice view of the river with a mountain behind behind it, and a flying osprey friend who flew back and forth along the river, occasionally diving for fish. The Birch cabin has a queen bed, a bathroom, a wood burner, and a perfect porch for lounging, relaxing and simply enjoying the simple art of being alive in a beautiful place. Maynard’s provided firewood which was hugely appreciated for when the nights got a little cool, which helped to set the mood our trip all the more. Our stay was relaxing, comfy, romantic, and just what Leah and I needed for our honeymoon.

Maynard’s offers what is called the American Plan, which is awesome, because it includes three meals a day (breakfast, a packed lunch and a fine dinner), with housekeeping everyday. That plan really cuts the cost of a trip, because at the moment of writing this, it’s only $90 a night, per person, no matter what size cabin. Otherwise, it’s $50 per person, without meals. Leah and I enjoyed the roast pork loin, which was dynamite, and then the next night we had baked and breaded scallops, which were to die for. Seriously, the food is so good! Maynard’s in Maine may not fit into the preset 5-star mold of amenities, but I can say truthfully that Leah and I had a 5-star experience at Maynard’s. We loved it so much so that we’re already talking about returning in the future.
