![]() Digital detox is when you take some much needed time away from the technological clutter that consumes your everyday life. Think of it as fasting from your phone, computer, and television. It has become somewhat of a cult phenomenon recently, with stories of people successfully unplugging and finding out there’s more to life, and more to socializing with others. For me, personally, I’d love to escape to an electricity-free cabin far away from civilization, where I must fend for myself and live simply, where all I have is a pen and paper to write my memoirs. But what once was a natural trait in all human beings, the ability to live off the land solely from what we grew or gamed, has long gone and nearly everyone in the world would need training to refresh their inner survivalist. I think it would be a life-changing, humbling and self-proving experience to be able to last a week or longer, in the wild, with nothing but a few basic supplies. Digital detox doesn’t typically mean that you take yourself away from your normal, everyday life, as I would like to do. You can have your own digital detox that coincides with your everyday routine. While you may not be able to completely get away with your detox at work, however you can unplug and box up your electronics at home, and make yourself avoid checking anything, be it Facebook, your email, or other various websites at work. You will notice a slight withdrawal at first, but soon enough you will begin to realize that you have more time to focus on the simplicities of life and what really means the most to you (ex. children, family, friends). Good luck with your digital detox, I would love to hear about your experience!

Yes even I would like to try this. Once I travelled to a remote village in India and thought I would be cut off from mobile, electricity etc but they had good access to electricity and mobile. But still it was fun in the nature among the greenery, mountains, birds and animals. The only sound I could hear was of birds. No vehicles, no horns :)

That's awesome to know that even small villages in India have access to technology. That must have been extremely peaceful to be away from the hustle and bustle of things.

The Philippines is a nice place to try digital detox. Explore different places and experience that island life.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing as I read this! I'm going there in a week, it'll be my 2nd visit, and I'm really looking forward to it.

They say that great minds think alike! There must be something to this destination. :) 1/18/2014 10:12:09 pm
Island life would be a perfect spot to detox myself from technology. :) Have you visited and attempted this?

I actually shut down every single Saturday between 9 and 5. It was really difficult to do at first. Every other thought was "I should go onto Facebook... and... no wait a minute... don't" but once you are used to it, it really is healing to take time away from our digital lives and spend the day doing something just for you. Great post and blog Brandon. I look forward to reading more.

That is a really good idea. I love the thought of shutting down all technology one day a week for a solid eight hours. This is something I should think about.

i think that everyone needs and deserves a little bit of down time, in regards to their technology. After awhile it has a way of consuming every waking moment of our lives, haha.

The experience of silence and peace is one of the most underrated medical tonics, along with laughter and love.

This is true. There is something very solid, and serene about just getting back to the basics. I am definitely going to do this!

Lovely Brandon, and so true. It is how we lived back in the day. We forget how much "noise" we are bombarded with in the digital world. The detox also makes us deal with our instant gratification issues and accept that at some level, we are all addicted to social media that is not really as meaningful as we like to think it is. Happy detox

Thank you! Over time our technology becomes like an appendage and if we don't have it we start going through withdrawl. haha
