The world’s largest salt flat, the Salar de Uyuni is located in the south western corner of Bolivia in South America. The flats sit near the crest of the Andes mountains at 3,656 meters (11,995 ft) above sea level, at the size of 10,582 square kilometers (4,086 sq mi) which is nearly equivalent of the state of Connecticut. The Salar was formed from prehistoric lakes which transformed over time to leave its exceptionally flat surface that it has today.
Besides the obvious unique landscape of the flats, they are particular known as a major breeding ground for several species of pink flamingos. During the wet season (November to March) the flats are covered in about 20 cm (7.87 in) of rainfall, creating a massive mirror that completely reflects the sky. Without a doubt, this is an amazing experience, especially for professionals and budding photographers alike. During the rainy season, the presence of the pink flamingos can be also enjoyed. However, during the dry season the tourism-trade is considered to be at its height. Even though the dry season doesn’t offer the mesmerizing reflective scenes, it’s recommended by most visitors, because the caves and other attractions are completely submerged during the wet season.
