Colorado has long been considered a sacred place, and every time I visit, I gain another layer complexity, or a sense of what makes it special. I have lived in Fort Collins before, nearly ten years ago, and much has changed, but much has remained steadfast as well. The whole front range offers a range of fantastic places to spend time when visiting, among my favorites is Boulder, Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. But, as with most people, it’s the mountains that draw my attention most of all. The Rockies have never left me filled without wonder, as I always have a feeling of arriving home when I begin to climb in elevation.

A Day of Wonder Featuring Alaska Wildland Adventures, Turkish Delight, Maria’s Creekside Inn9/11/2023 Last month I had the unbelievable opportunity to visit Alaska for the first time, and it was well beyond what I imagined it would be. It’s so beautiful, rugged, wild, mystical and magical, and I loved every moment exploring the wilderness, the mountains, the fjords, rivers, and parks. I arrived off the plane, gathered my luggage and set out in a rental car. My first stop was the Turnagain Arm before heading to my accommodation on Kenai Peninsula. The summer light was long, allowing for a mere 3 hours of night, but it really wasn’t all that dark, so I took advantage of as much sightseeing as my tired eyes could handle. From there, I spent the next couple of days exploring Seward and Homer, taking two cruises through the fjords, which was definitely the highlight of the entire trip.
A day trip from Anchorage led me to the Alaska Riverview Lodge in Kasilof, Alaska. After our brilliant trip to Seward and boat trip through the Kenai Fjorda National Park and Resurrection Bay, we drove across the peninsula to stay the night at the lodge. The drive over was about two hours from Seward and it was full of beautiful cliffs and forests, and the unfortunate remnants of the Swan Lake fire, which definitely had us feeling sorrowful for the loss of life.
Oh, boy! Let me tell you something… I had the adventure of a lifetime last week in Alaska. Before heading northwest by way of Alaskan Airlines, I envisioned Alaska would be a magical place, but I had no idea it was as special, as wild, as giant, as mesmerizing, and as sacred as it was. I spent ten days venturing around the state with my father-in-law Ken, and he is a wild man at heart who spends lots of time in nature and out west, and it was better than either of us had imagined it to be.
After a long day of driving along the gorgeous coast, I found myself in the seaside town of Florence, Oregon. A short walk along the boardwalk yielded a gated collection of boats and small yachts. I entered through the gate and ventured down a metal ramp, then walked a short way to a floating building that read, “Novelli’s Crab & Seafood: Award Winning Chowder.”
Of all the places I’ve been and beautiful scenes I’ve witnessed, the California Redwood parks are among the finest of all, because not only are ancient and mind boggling huge, towering upwards of 300-350 feet, but they’re magical as well. When you hike through the many redwood parks (like Humboldt, Montgomery, Del Norte, Prairie Creek, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and the Redwoods National Park), eventually you get to a place that feels different, and speaks to you.
