A Mid-Life Make Over: featuring the Scala Valencia Safari

When you find yourself in a funk, one that has prolonged for years, and every time you look yourself in the mirror, if you feel blah, or meh, or simply unenthused, it may be time for some active changes. That’s the sort of feeling I had this past year. I was tired of the short beard, the steel earrings I’ve had since I was in my late teens, and my overall look. It’s easy to get too comfortable, to get into a routine, because modern life simply is that way at times. You get up, you get ready and goto work, you come home and you’re too tired to care about much else. It’s no way to live. And stale is no way to be.

The day is near, and while it’s crunch time with a little bit of chaos thrown in, as to be expected, my beard and moustache are ready for the big day. But it wasn’t always like that. For years, I’ve struggled with growing out a full, well-manicured beard, because of a few thinner patches on my cheeks and my incessant need to trim my moustache prematurely. It gets difficult to eat when it hangs over your top lip, ya know?

Without you, my lovely readers and precious supporters – more like my friends – I would not be able to do what I love or be able to travel the world as I do… And I wanted to take the time to let you know how I appreciate you so!

It was just not right

I want to start by saying that I appreciate everyone’s support, well wishes, and beautiful and touching letters in response to my recent personal post, “Blast from the past.” I write this with a heavy heart and an ever-clearing mind, but sometimes no matter how right some things feel, destiny has another plan for you. It’s more often than not, but that is how life goes. It’s easy to lose hope when all seems lost, and when all you’ve ever wanted was visible through the open doorway at the end of the distant hall, yet it has since closed.

Blast from the past

Have you ever had someone breeze back into your life, and feel as though nothing had ever changed?

This is a personal post, which as you may know from reading my blog, this doesn’t happen super often.

I have friends that come and go, many that I’ve had fantastic moments with, and then they were gone, like a puff of smoke, wafting away in a crisp breeze. And then I have other friends who I shared intimate moments with, be it conversation or a life-changing event, and when these types of friends come back into my life, it’s as if no time had passed, and the music never skipped a beat. It’s an amazing feeling, something that I will forever cherish.

As the familiar phrase goes, “I can’t believe it’s been a year already!” – so does my indignation that time flies by as fast as it does. It’s almost a cruel jest that it’s so easy to let life pass you by – but even for those who live life to the fullest, time passes by perhaps seemingly faster, as joyful times are but the speediest. My past year has been the best in recent memory – I traveled for nearly eight straight months, visiting 25 countries, where 19 of which were completely new to me. I have to say that I had one hell of a time along the way, and I can only hope that the coming new year is just as good, if not even better – and with current plans in mind, that may not be so hard to imagine.
