It’s an expensive period of the year at the best of times but if you’ve got your heart set on going away this Christmas the expense can shoot up. However, you don’t have to go far or spend big to have a merry Christmas getaway. There are cheap flights, package holidays and plenty of places in the UK to get festive in without breaking the bank.  Besides, Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the chilly weather, than chance of snow and a warm fire to enjoy. Here are a few ideas for cheap Christmas getaways.

Derry
The UK Capital of Culture has undergone a renaissance since it got the crown last year. Derry is a historic walled city with plenty to see and do. Its winding streets, with great shops and restaurants as well as crafters and makers shops provide Christmas fun for the whole family. There’s also a Christmas Village to visit with a fun fair, craft bar and live music. Cheap flights from London, Liverpool and Glasgow make it a great option for your seasonal break.

Prague
Winter in Prague is a magical time. The Castle next to the river, picturesque bridges over the Vltava River and a myriad of festive markets all create the perfect atmosphere for a Christmas away. If you are lucky enough to have snow the sights will stay with you for a life time. Prague is another destination to which it is possible to fly with a range of budget airlines.

Scottish Highlands
With snowy mountains, gorgeous log cabins and beautiful wildlife, Scotland is an enchanting place to spend a few days over Christmas. Rent out a cabin for the whole family, enjoy a Boxing Day haggis and go on a healthy walk in the snow.

Llandudno
There’s more to Llandudno than just a summer seaside holiday destination, at Christmas the town comes alive with a seasonal fayre. Local foods, hand-made crafts and a Santa’s grotto provide fun for everyone. Tour operator UK Breakaways organise inexpensive breaks in Llandudno which include travel and accommodation.

Durham
With its imposing Cathedral and Castle World Heritage site, Durham is a picturesque city all year round. In December, the city’s Christmas Festival brings a special festive magic to the place. For a truly historical (and educational) Christmas experience you can also visit the nearby living museum of Beamish.

London
A trip to London over the festive season will remind you of what Christmas is all about. The options for entertainment are almost limitless and you are constantly reminded of the festive magic conjured up by Charles Dickens. There are ice rinks set up around the city in Canary Wharf, Broadgate and Hampton Court Palace.
