If you are planning to visit Canada and you have never experienced winter in your life, then you may want to consider sending in your visa application forms for filling the Canada ETA and delay your trip further until the winter is over. Experiencing winter in Canada means that you will need to forge a new friendship with snow boots, lots of layers, and snow pants which will be vital for keeping you warm during the bone-chilling cold.
Canada, indeed, has some of the worst temperatures in the world, and for the interest of the general knowledge, here is a look at some of the cities you may not want to experience winter in when you are visiting Canada. Experiencing winter in these cities, especially if you have never experienced a harsh winter before will be extremely uncomfortable and you will have to adapt very fast if you want to survive.

Placentia, Newfoundland
If you think of coming out of winter alive in Placentia in Newfoundland, then you must be sure to have a good pair of boots and super warm jackets. In this city, the snowfall can hit 173cm, but when you add this to 575mm of winter rainfall, with subzero temperatures, you get a deadly winter combination that can sniffle the life out of you if you don't take staying warm seriously. But being in this city during winter doesn't mean that life should stop and you should be resigned to the indoors. You can always stay dry and enjoy great performances at the Placentia Bay Cultural Arts Center. You can also visit The Three Sisters Pub for a hot cup of soup to keep the cold at bay.

Lethbridge in Alberta
In winter, the snow may not be the only concern in Lethbridge, and this doesn't make winter particularly harsh. However, this region is right on the path of the famous Chinook winds which may sometimes clock up to 117km/h. If you have never experienced a hurricane in your life and you find yourself in Lethbridge during winter, you may think that one is in the making, and if you have a hat, you want to hold tight onto it because the Chinook winds won't let it sit pretty on your head. With such winter unpredictability in Lethbridge, you don't want to take any chances with your warmth, and you must always ensure that you have lots of layers all the time.

Ottawa in Ontario
Other than being Canada's capital city, Ottawa is also one of the cities known to experience some of the worst winters not just in Canada, but in the entire world. As a matter of fact, Ottawa holds the record of being the world's oldest city and was the snowiest city between the winter seasons of 2016 – 2017. With another bad reputation of having the worst commute in Canada, winters in Ottawa can be very depressing.

Due to these and other factors, it is a no-brainer that most of the locals prefer to ditch their cars for skates when the months of winter come calling. The city has well over 230 outdoor rinks, and these are sufficient to keep the residents busy and entertained when the snow begins to fall. Though the winters in Ottawa maybe cruel, there are a plethora of things you can do remain entertained and forget about the winter for some time.

Whether it is music at The Record Center or cuddling kitties at the Feline Café, you will never fail to find something for fun which will also help you stay warm.

Burns Lake in British Columbia
When it snows in Burns Lake, it really snows, and this may be the last place you may want to visit during winter in Canada. This city holds the record for experiencing the most snowing in one day when within just 24hours, the snow levels rose to 145cm on the 11th of February, 1999. But snowing is a normal thing in winter, and may not be a bother if you have been experiencing winters in extreme places. However, if you are new to this city, be sure to arm yourself with the right kinds of clothing. You can also consider the myriad of fun activities taking place around to get entertained and also help you keep warm.

Kenaston
Kenaston was once known as the Blizzard Capital of Canada and this was due to the heavy snowing the area receives. To prove just how serious the snowing was, it built a snowman statue, making it one of the worst places to ever imagine spending your winters in Canada. The region is not only very cold but also windy and located in the rural areas. Again, due to its location, you may not find a lot of things to engage in to get entertained. Perhaps the best way to spend the snowy days is to make yourself busy in the best ways you know and probably don't let the cup of hot chocolate run dry.

Winnipeg in Manitoba
If you want to know the true definition of a miserable winter, then make your way to Winnipeg when winter comes calling. Winnipeg has a reputation for having very bad winters, in addition to also being labeled Canada's coldest major city. It has everything going badly for it as far as winter is concerned, having the coldest winter temperatures, and the higher number of freezing days. But though the winters are that harsh, there are a number of things you can always do keep yourself entertained and also keep warm. Winnipeg has very nice joints for bonfires and indoor games to help you forget about the cold outside and enjoy every single day until the winter is over.

Yellow Knife
Yellow Knife is in the northern provinces of Canada, and this also makes it one of the cities in the northernmost parts of the world. Yellow Knife has a reputation of having the most severe wind chills in Canada and also the longest snow cover in the season. If you have to spend your winter in this remote city, then be sure to cover every inch of your skin, always being in close proximity with a warm blanket and the fireplace.
