GSI Outdoors specializes in great camp gear and cooking solutions, and in their current lineup, they offer the 20” Steel Skillet, which is a no-fuss, rugged, non-stick pan. It’s almost comical how huge this thing is; when I opened the box, I just had to laugh. It’s huge, and heavy, and it’s not really made for backpacking deep backwoods necessarily, but it’s perfect for sizable groups of hungry campers. When I say 20-inches, I mean 20-inches… And I don’t think that measurement does it any justice, as the main cooking area seems bigger. But perhaps that’s due to the equally as large detachable handle.
If this is a product that cures your need, for optimum results, I’d suggest purchasing a large folding rack that stands on its own to sit above a flat and even fire. It’s important to make sure the cooking rack is made for open fire, and is tall enough to give you enough space for a solid fire or bed of coals, because I’m not joking when I say this is a serious skillet for a serious group of seriously hungry explorers; which is why it’s important to have a solid foundation underneath the skillet.
Overall, I found the make and craftsmanship of the 20” Steel Skillet by GSI Outdoors to be of high quality. The product description states that it’s a high volume, long-lasting and durable skillet, and I’d have to agree entirely. The 20” Steel Skillet is finished with a non-stick surface and built with a rugged steel construction, providing the user with years of cooking and hosting large groups. I found that this skillet would be overkill for any less than eight people, but brilliant when time and quantity is a concern. Food cooks evenly across the cooking surface, and this thing is built to last a hundred camping trips.
