I believe this discussion can be argued to be the subject of priorities, based on an individual's choice. Are your traveling for the right reasons? Because I can argue that if culture, learning, growing and experience were your priority in travel, then you would obviously not be worried about luxury or amenities. If you're simply looking to get away from home and are in search of a vacation, then luxury may be your goal – share your thoughts in the comments section below... (Photo by Trey Ratcliff)

Traveling cheaper and longer definitely trumps for me as well. :)

I have also stayed in a few places that were very economical and received very good accommodations. Its all about doing research prior to taking any trip

Hi Brandon - a hard question for me to answer. We don't have the luxury of travelling for very long periods of time, unfortunately because of our day jobs which make us the money we need to travel! Therefore when we do travel, we try to make it as much of a treat as possible by staying at places that, although they are not usually the top luxury hotels because they are so expensive, they nonetheless make us feel a little spoiled and pampered - which is not how we feel when we are at home working the rest of the time. I guess it's a trade off. How one travels also has a lot to do with the age you are. When we were younger we were more willing to stay at questionable places and do everything cheaply, and it was wonderful nonetheless. Now as we are older, we don't really want to cut corners anymore... It's always a balancing game - how long can you go for and how much do you have to spend in that amount of time..... Great question, though!

I can completely see how quality would take the cake over traveling more economical when the length of travel is supposed to be short. If I was on a time length that restrained this for me, I would also choose quality.

My most memorable trips were not luxury trips.

I can relate. I have made some great memories while traveling more economically.

In my experience a nice hotel with all the amenities is a good way to avoid exploring and actually visiting the place one is visiting. Totally my opinion but I consider resorts to be the work of the devil :P

I can see that. I can see how staying in a nice resort, or traveling with with quality in mind would keep one inside and not exploring the world around them.

I would definitely say longer as long as the accommadations were adequate ie shared bathrooms! With so many great deals online I think this is doable especially if you dont have the funds to travel I do think if you have the funds there is nothing wrong with quick luxurious trips!!

I love traveling longer and cheaper. I like to explore, and capture any pictures of my adventures. If I am staying somewhere luxurious I tend to not want to leave my room.

It definitely doesn't have to be cheaper. With proper research one can kill two birds with one stone. I do like to get both cheaper, without loosing the quality of service and accommodations.

The best way to go would be a combination of both. Traveling with scraps is the worst so lets have little bit of both worlds

An excellent thought provoking question. Like most of the responses here I would opt for a combination of the two, edging more toward the cheaper end of the scale, mostly by necessity in terms of budget, We usually like to splurge on one nice meal a day (maybe every two days) and the rest of the time cobbling together what we can from grocery stores or better yet local street vendors and stalls. For accommodation we're a bit past the hostel phase of life but always looking for that elusive low-priced but comfy/clean hotel/motel.

I don't do much traveling for luxury. Here in Thailand there are so many great mid range places to stay which are equally as comfortable as a 5 star hotel. In my opinion the room is just a room you and you travel to get new experiences which don't tend to happen at the resort or in the hotel room. I use the room as my base and a place to sleep. I'm much more into travel to be out and about seeing things and tasting food!.
