While the Scottish countryside and cities play host to a number of great attractions, ‘dreechit’ is a catch-all phrase which sums up the weather and the mentality for the majority of the populace.
That’s why it’s heartening to know that Edinburgh International Airport is only a short drive away from Scotland’s capital, and it can fly you to some of the sunniest locations in the world.
But it’s the flights we’re interested in so, without further ado, here are five that have caught our attention.
1. Barcelona, Spain
The capital of the Catalan region of Spain, Barcelona is a heartland of culture no matter where you look.
Head to the Gothic Quarter and you’ll bump into the Picasso Museum. Hit the vast beaches to soak up sun. Take a trek around the city and see if you can find every building created by legendary architect Antoni Gaudi.
As you wander through its teeming streets, you’ll encounter friendly people and more bars than a craft beer enthusiast’s wet dreams. And if you head to the Gracia region, you’ll find a seemingly endless series of squares dedicated to fine dining.
It’s a wonderful location – and its airport is only a subway ride away!
2. Faro, Portugal
Faro is the capital of Portugal’s Algarve region and, while it’s often overlooked by tourists, it’s filled with a treasure trove of things to see and do.
The highlight of your trip will inevitably be the Ria Formosa nature park, a breath-taking series of lagoons and mudflats which plays host to an impressive array of birdlife and other creatures.
This natural wonder of the world opens onto a series of pristine beaches which are ideal for anyone who loves nothing more than relaxing with a good book while sand tickles their feet.
That’s only the tip of the iceberg – Faro is an authentic Portugese experience.
3.Luqa, Malta
Luqa, a small village on the coast of Malta, is a culture vulture’s dream destination. Its vast number of excavated burial sites and megalithic temples act as a touching point between us and civilisations that existed thousands of years ago, and will leave you awestruck.
Once you’re done embedding yourself in past cultures, the Pretty Bay Beach is a must-see for anyone looking for clean sands and sparkling seas.
That’s our list – but it’s far from comprehensive. Why not tell us where your favourite flights from Edinburgh take you?
