There’s something beautiful that happens to the human experience when it gives itself over to the things of the soul. John Muir knew that, and in his quote above he talks about losing his mind to find his soul. What I’ve always taken from that is that when you live in the moment, feeling everything the natural world gives to you in sensory details, like the wind, the birds, and the sensation of belonging that can come with extended time among unspoiled land, then your brain sort of shuts off, easing into the sensory overload of emotion and beauty, and soul.
When you surround yourself in true wilderness, and simply let yourself experience everything around you, down to the insects on the ground, the detail of the bark and the sounds and smells that are all around, then you escape from the overworked, anxiety-ridden lifestyle of our modern life and you calm, and you begin to see and feel the rest of the natural world. We’ve grown apart from Nature and it shows in many of our symptoms of emotional and mental struggles, and that’s why I believe it’s so important to go back to your roots to find yourself.
