–John Muir
There’s something beautiful that happens to the human experience when it gives itself over to the things of the soul. John Muir knew that, and in his quote above he talks about losing his mind to find his soul. What I’ve always taken from that is that when you live in the moment, feeling everything the natural world gives to you in sensory details, like the wind, the birds, and the sensation of belonging that can come with extended time among unspoiled land, then your brain sort of shuts off, easing into the sensory overload of emotion and beauty, and soul.
When you surround yourself in true wilderness, and simply let yourself experience everything around you, down to the insects on the ground, the detail of the bark and the sounds and smells that are all around, then you escape from the overworked, anxiety-ridden lifestyle of our modern life and you calm, and you begin to see and feel the rest of the natural world. We’ve grown apart from Nature and it shows in many of our symptoms of emotional and mental struggles, and that’s why I believe it’s so important to go back to your roots to find yourself.
I like to grab a big tent like the Roughhouse 6 by Slumberjack and get away with my favorite people. There’s nothing that compares to time spent away from cell phone reception, in the wilderness, surrounded by the world from which we humans evolved. You make deeper connections within your relationships, but even more important is the inner journey, as you can come back feeling like a new person, at peace, and fulfilled in ways you may never have felt before. So when you need a change, or a simply recharge, seek the wilder places and you will find a deeper truth.
The reason I like the Slumberjack Roughhouse 6 is because it’s big enough to feel roomy with several people, yet easy to build and haul along deeper treks into the forest. The Roughhouse 6 offers a low profile design that assists in weathering strong winds, and is overall a fine, durable and reliable tent. It offers a large interior living space which feels almost luxurious when you’re camping with less than four people, and yet works fine for larger outings. Other features include a front porch vestibule that converts into a large shade awning, and this tent includes a full coverage rain fly, ventilated walls, mesh pockets for storage, and wraps up into a duffel bag. All in all, it’s a great tent with nice size, solid build and versatile features that help keep you and your things safe from the elements.
