Exploring the Soul in Music with the DT 1990 Pro Reference Headphones by Beyerdynamic

Since I was young, music has always been my friend and crutch, my healer and sometimes my support system in the heat of the moment. No matter the mood, a sound exists that can soothe you, or simply continue to stoke the fire, and when all hope seems lost or if it feels as though your heart can’t take more pain, the music is there to be your muse. I remember lonely days riding the bus to high school, while the music pumping through my headphones kept me company and gave me an outlet, and a way to find solace when I rarely felt I belonged.

I often remember the origins of certain types of music that bring me back when I hear them anew. I can picture where I was, what I was feeling, and what my life was like at that time, almost like each moment is each their own chapters of my past. And even though I can barely recall the seemingly oh-so important details from those past lives I once led, I can still remember the way the sound worked with what I was feeling; much like how a scent can bring you back a decade or more, only to remind you of something unimportant and minuscule that made me feel something. We remember most the way things and people make us feel. For, it is the music that connects and binds, and dances with the soul.

Ultimately, the best way to listen to music is through vinyl media. And while nostalgia may be to blame for some folks, for me I simply prefer my music loud and as dynamic as if it was being played live before me. And that is why I love vinyl. Not only is it the last physical form of music that a fanboy like myself can collect and enjoy. Though, beyond the physicality of this form of music reproduction, vinyl offers a more dynamic sound, a warmer sound, and one that has a great depth of quality that has been lost and forgotten in the modern digital mixing. And when you pair high quality, clean vinyl with reference level audio equipment, then you’ve created an experience, a soulful journey.

For optimal experience, I like to employ studio headphones that allow me to be immersed in the music, to where I can play it loud and not anger the neighbors, and to where I can almost meditate and fall away from the everyday grind and simply lose myself in the music. One of my favorite headphone brands is German made Beyerdynamic, because they offer a wide range of high quality audio headphones, for home use, on the go, studio and for audiophiles like me who prefer hearing every detail very loud and crystal clear. I received a pair of the DT 1990 Pro Headphones a couple of months ago to aid in the writing of this feature article, and I was blown away by the sound quality right away.

Beyerdynamic’s DT 1990 Pro’s are reference level studio headphones that are perhaps more often used for mixing and mastering, but are also capable of providing a dynamic listening option for any vinyl fan or reference audio collector. They are open-back studio headphones that offer a sophisticated sound, perfect for listening, mixing, and mastering. With its high resolution sound capabilities, driven by the 250 ohms 45-mm dynamic Tesla neodymium driver, the DT 1990 Pro’s offer the perfect marriage of power and precision that I haven’t found in many other headphones, which is why they are so versatile and capable of performing for professional studio and sound engineers. You have to hear them for yourself, but even still, the best way I can describe them is that they have brilliant highs, a rich and detailed midrange, with a precise, booming bass that brings the music together in a beautiful and powerful way.

The construction of the open-back design offers a natural, spatial sound, while remaining comfortable and ergonomic on the inside of each ear pad. The ear pads themselves are soft, and cushioned, which is perfect for audio professionals who may keep them on their heads for eight to ten hours a day. For additional sound options, there are two sets of interchangeable velour ear pads, one for a more well-balanced sound and another for a more analytical sound, best used for sound tuning and detail mixing. The headband on most headphones fail during long use, causing pressure headaches and indentations and skin irritations, but I noticed none of that with prolonged listening of the DT 1990 Pro’s. In fact… What I loved most about the DT 1990 Pro’s is not only the overall sound quality, which is awesome, but also it’s ability to bring out the best in nearly every genre; so much so that even 1970’s classic rock sounds live when played with vinyl through a quality amp. That, and they are extremely comfortable. I’m a big fan, if you couldn’t tell.
