It wasn’t until some outlandish assertions had been shared that we started talking about any other ‘extreme’ courses or holes we might know about. So, we decided to compile a list of some of our favorites. Some are entire courses, others are single holes that are just ridiculously difficult!
A quick search for the Merapi Golf Course will return wonderful panoramic views of their stunning course designs. This is all true but in the background there is a rather ominous looking mountain.
That is actually Mount Merapi, which last erupted as recently as 2011, damaging much of the course. It isn’t the first time and it isn’t the first time that is has erupted whilst people have been playing.
Uummannaq Golf Course
Over in Greenland, this is considered the northernmost course in the world; so it’s pretty chilly. However, it can’t be that bad seeing as it has been the home of the annual World Ice Golf Championship since 1997.
Prisonview Golf Course
We won’t beat about the bush; this is quite literally a golf course in a prison! In Angola, Louisiana, the Prisonview Golf Course offers nine holes, par 72 across 6,000 yards. It also comes with security checks, searches and even background searches! Oh, and some interesting spectators.
As a side note, inmates are not allowed on the course, only to work on it. It was actually created for staff in an attempt to boost morale.
Cypress Point Golf Course
This is all about the 16th hole. This popular Florida course has breathtaking views, is often busy with other golfers and promises a great day out. All going well so far. Then the 16th hole!
It is a 231 yard drive – over the Pacific Ocean. This is no pond or lake, this is waves and strong winds in between you and landing the ball on the green.
Riviera at Pacific Palisades
We’re still in America, in California this time and to round things off with gone with a hole that isn’t as dramatic. That isn’t to say the 18th here isn’t any less difficult.
It’s a straight drive down the fairway; only problem is, you can’t see the flag from the tee! It is very much a hit and hope you’ve guessed right.
With all these challenging holes and courses, it is probably a good idea to have a bit of insurance; you know, just in case!
