As our world ever-evolves, more and more of us are coming to the realization that the quality of our food matters, and that by eating low-quality, low-nutrient, GMO/processed foods is lowering our quality and quantity of life. Studies have shown that eating these kinds of bad foods are literally shaving time off our lives, and filling us with disease. Sure, they can be tasty, and they may even make us feel full, but if you understood everything that’s going on inside you after that greasy burger, or that ramen, then I bet you (like me) would start thinking of healthier choices for a more fulfilling life, with longevity.

GMO foods have some small merit in that they were originated to help produce higher yields, with less issues, to better serve our fast-increasing population growth, but something went wrong. Somewhere something went awry. Where? How? What? Why? I don’t know, and I’m guessing that many scientists are still grappling with this harsh truth of our manipulations. My opinion is that we were never meant to play ‘god,’ and therefore should not act as though we are. Life is a precious, living force, that went on before us for some 15 billion years, and will go on after we go extinct. So, maybe it’s just me, but it seems that we ought to leave such a mysterious and amazing force alone, which includes the tinkering with genetics and the mass-extinction of wildlife.

Okay, enough of my soap box rants… The reason for this article is to help you find a way toward healthy eating and sustainable living, because we all want to feel better, and experience life to the fullest for the longest each of us can, and (hopefully) leave as little of a negative impact as on the planet as possible. I am striving to leave a positive impact but I know I have a long way to go, because to be honest, I lived in the normal way that our culture promotes, for decades, and so my negative impact far outweighs the positives, but I am trying, and so can you. Not only am I limiting the resources I take up, and the trash that I produce, but I am striving to eat better in a sustainable way. How? Well, I buy local produce, and I plant my own garden, among other creative approaches to a simpler life.

One of my favorite discoveries over the past few years is the ability to acquire large amounts of non-GMO seeds, so that it’s possible to grow and maintain your own food supply. Why this is so important is because there is a strong system continuing to ensure that the original seed genetics go on untainted, but also because it allows a single person to grow their own food, manage the conditions and confirm that the quality of their produce is top notch. And if you are a conspiracy theorist or believe the world could end at any moment, having a seed bank collection that is sealed, and can last five to ten years, then if all does end, you can bring life back to the planet. There are longer lasting seed banks, setup for longterm storage, too.

My goto this year is the Survival Essentials collection, sold on Amazon, that provides 135 varieties of premium heirloom non-hybrid, non-geo seeds. That’s a total of 23,300+ seeds! Survival Essentials brings together just about every kind of vegetable, fruit, medicinal and culinary herb available. Plus, they throw in nine rare tomato varieties as well. So, not only will you have enough seeds to support yourself, a single package (currently running at around $75 USD) can support an entire family, and if properly implemented, you could feed an entire neighborhood or small village with all of these seeds.

The 135 variety pack includes a wide range of veggies, fruits, and herbs, which include the following (and much, much more): Alfalfa, asparagus, basil, beans, beet, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery, collards, corn, cucumber, dill, eggplant, kale, lettuce, melon, mustard, okra, onion, parsley, parsnip, pea, pepper, pumpkin, radish, spinach, squash, thyme, tomato, turnip, watermelon, etc.

I found the Survival Essentials’ Premium Heirloom Seed Bank to be a lovely collection of a wide variety of seeds, that would make any gardener happy, because they are quality seeds that grow into quality natural foods, and come in such a variety that even the pickiest of natural grazers will find things they like. So, even if the dollar crashes, and our modern culture falls, you can ensure that you will survive and eat will with a seed bank created for just such an occasion. I love how much fun I had getting my garden started this past year, and I love having so many options. Plus, on their website you can find a ton of information, covering how to grow each individual plant, with helpful tips on planting and growing, as well as preventing problems, while accomplishing optimum yields and produce health.
