Finding the perfect hair care products is an ever-changing journey. One that will likely have more downs than ups, because if you’re trying various products in search of just the right consistency, scent, and effect, you are likely to trial a bunch of nots, before you find the one. And as time passes, you will change your style a hundred times, and products will change, and so it can be a never-ending process. I don’t know how many times I found the perfect product for my hair or beard and after some time, the recipe changed or the product was discontinued. It’s the worst. So now, I take a different approach to finding what works best for me.

I used to pickup a random bottle, usually drawn by the packaging, and use it until it was gone, because I hated spending all that money on hair products, only to waste it, so I’d do my best to make it work; that is, unless the product was absolute garbage. Now, with the popularity of internet reviewing, I’m able to research real-life opinions and find out exactly what kind of an effect the product will have, the quality of ingredients and the scent notes like never before. Recently, upon searching for some beard care help, I came across a quality company by the name of Battle Born Grooming Co., who specialize in three products: the Unorthodox Pomade, the Revolution Beard Balm and Beard Oil. Not only did Battle Born’s products have nearly unanimous 5-star ratings, but they also raving reviews that described the best uses of the products and even included photos of how they formed their own hairstyles.

So, I reached out to the company to trial their products for you here today. Since I have my wedding upcoming, I’ve rededicated efforts to growing a full, healthy and (if I can manage it) righteous beard. I used to suffer from beard neglect, because of uncertainty in logistics, as well as one helluva dryness problem. But with a month of testing Battle Born’s products, I’ve noticed that my beard is coming in thicker and healthier than ever before. The beard oil is best used after a good beard washing to help condition the hair as well as the skin underneath, where many have dryness problems. The balm, I find, is best if employed in tandem with some oil at the beginning of each day, especially if you’re skipping a shower one day (which is important for healthy growth, to not over wash your beard) and you find your beard is all out of whack, because the balm is similar to the oil in its conditioning effect, but it is better at styling and taming the wilder aspects of a newly growing beard. And it smells awesome.

The Unorthodox Pomade is certainly unique, in that Battle Born creates them in small batches, and in the consistency. Buying big brand pomade has been risky at best for me, and since results are always so notoriously inconsistent, I like to find one pomade and stick with it. The problem tends to be with its ability to style correctly, hold and for long period of time. But Battle Born has figured this dilemma out, because their pomade works as advertised, holding strong, yet remaining easy to wash out, since it is of course a water based formula. What I love most, though, about Battle Born’s hair care line is that they are all natural as far as ingredients go, and that comes through in its intoxicating scent: a mix of sweet vanilla, rich cedarwood and woodsy clove. All in all, I really like what Battle Born Grooming Co.’s got going on here.
