Featuring ButcherBox’s Monthly Meat Treat By Mail

In today’s world, you can order just about anything and it’ll come straight to your door, no matter if it’s from across the state, country, or even across the world. This may be a perk that many of us take for granted, but it wasn’t long ago that having fresh meat sent through the mail would have been considered insanity. But not now, not today, because some companies have fine-tuned the experience for its customers and can now send packages with dry ice through the mail, across the country, and it still be cold and safe to consume. It’s pretty amazing.

I recently partnered with ButcherBox to test and review one of their monthly boxes, and so here’s my honest thoughts about their service. I signed up for their Beef and Pork box, which included bacon, 85/15 grass-fed ground beef, NY strip, top sirloin steaks, pork chops and baby back ribs. At first, I was a bit skeptical about shipping all of that through the mail. In fact, my first box came and all of the dry ice had melted and the meat was no longer cold to the touch. I was instructed to throw out the box and was assured that this does indeed happen, but typically less than 1% of the time. Customer service was on top of it immediately, sending out a new box right away which arrived a few days later. It was sad to waste what looked like some damn good eats, but the second box was a success.

ButcherBox specializes in wholesome meats that are cultivated safely and healthy, without the antibiotics and formulated feed. Their chickens are raised humanely without antibiotics and without hormones. The bacon is uncured and free from sugar and nitrates. The beef is 100% grass-fed and grass-finished, while much of the chick is free range organic, and on top of that, their pork is heritage breed. Some of those phrases may sound fancy, but in the end it means your meat is safer for you to consume and is likely to have you feeling better after eating than with some lesser quality meats. At least, that’s what I found in my own experience.

I started with the bacon, which had great flavor, and cooked up easier than most that I’ve bought recently at the local grocery. The fat versus meat content was perfect, and the cut was even better, allowing for even and flat cooked pieces that will impress any bacon connoisseur. From there, I made a couple of meals with steaks on the grill which were immaculate. Some of which may fairly be attributed to my mad skills, if I don’t mind saying, but truly, it is the quality of the meat that came through in the absolute mouth-watering flavor. The steaks turned out juicy and tender, yet charred to perfection on the outside. No ketchup, A1, or additional spices needed, though a good steak spice will add a helluva punch!

I decided to use the NY strips in my mother-in-law’s famous meat pie recipe and it turned out, without hyperbole, seriously epic. Imagine a buttery, flaky pastry covering a thick meat and gravy pie. Add mashed potatoes and it was a feast of feasts. The taste of the gravy was out of this world, rich and buttery, and oh so delicate. Typically in meat pie, you might choose a lower grade meat since you’re slow cooking it for several hours before even messing with the pastry, but let me tell you that when you use high quality meat you get top quality taste. But that’s no big surprise.

For November, ButcherBox has a couple of pretty cool specials running…
–Nov 1st-30th: They’re offering ‘Bacon for Life’  to new members, who will get a free pack of bacon in every order for the life of their subscription.
–Black Friday-Cyber Monday, Nov 23rd-26th: They’re offering the ‘Ultimate Steak Sampler’ to new members, who will receive 2 free ribeyes, 2 free NY strips, and 2 free filet mignon in their first order!
