The mobile phone world is an exciting and ever-changing one, and while the latest and greatest feels fluid at any given moment, with each new invention and new feature, one thing remains true, which is that we all love to find what defines us. Much like a t-shirt choice, a phone case choice is among those minute decisions that add a bit of character, personality and pizzaz to our lives and our appearance, if one so chooses it. It can feel like a fashion choice. Not only are there hundreds of thousands of varying phone cases on the market, but there are few companies who create truly unique pieces. And even less who keep the price within reason.

When I purchased my first iPhone some years back, I scoured the internet for a fine wood case, something unique with real wood, that would make me happy and define my aesthetic. Eventually I found a company who made specialized all wood phone cases, but they charged hundreds of dollars for their cases, and while they looked very fine, that sort of price tag is obscene to the majority of us. But now-a-days, there are equally good options for much more reasonable prices, which is why I reached out to Carved.

Carved is a phone and electronics company that specializes in wood cases, wood wallets, power banks, bluetooth speakers, cables, and more. They even make custom wood cases with your own design on it; how cool is that?! I reached out recently and Carved sent me an iPhone case and their Acoustic Acorn speaker to test for this feature, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and dynamic look of the iPhone case, as well as by the sound quality that comes the tiny Acorn speaker.

I opted for the Traveler Wood Case by Carved, which is a slim case with rubber bumpers that has a real wood cover on the back, so each case is as unique as each piece of wood. The bumper wrap around the edge of the phone, offering a stable support system that is safer to use than most all-wood cases, because with a single fall an all wood case could split on you, but Carved’s cases should have no issue there. The wood grain on this case has a beautiful marbling as you can see from the photos, and is like a piece of art in itself. I’m a big fan of this look.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Acoustic Acorn bluetooth speaker, because it’s so tiny at 12oz, but upon working with it, I was impressed by the quality of sound that comes from such a small speaker. The beauty about the Acorn is that it’s actually made with walnut and is so easily mobile at a mere 3”x3” in size. The bluetooth capability is wonderful for when you’re running around, maybe doing housework, as you can simply take it with you anywhere, and since it works unto 33 feet/10 meters, it rarely cuts out with distance in ones home. Overall, I really enjoyed working with this speaker, and I guess if I had to nitpick, my only criticism is that I’m a bass lover and would enjoy a bit more boom, but for its size, the Acoustic Acorn is mighty.
