When you’re wandering through a natural place far from civilization, there’s few things that are more important than a solid pair of hiking shoes. In my opinion, that’s just one of those things you don’t skimp on. Never settle for the cheapest ones, because a myriad of things can happen when you’re in the wilderness, and a quality pair of shoes can be the difference between life and death. Imagine becoming lost, and as you come upon a rocky, mountainous terrain as a sudden storm unleashes overhead, and you slip… I’m just saying. Things like that have happened to me, so you have to be prepared as best as you can. Which brings me to two other points to never skimp on: a survival blade and a way to make fire (I prefer carrying a stormproof lighter and a traditional flint and steel kit).

I have a few varying styles of hiking shoes/boots, each best for a different season or terrain, but one of my favorite goto’s is Garmont. Because when it comes to Garmont’s footwear, they don’t mess around, offering a premier quality to every style and use of outdoor footwear. I’ve tested their cold weather boots and their low-cut hiking shoes, now I’m bringing their new Miguasha line to you, and every time I’m deeply impressed by the quality of the material and craftsmanship of the shoe itself, let alone how long they last.

Garmont advertises their new Miguasha hiking shoe as ‘the perfect travel companion,’ and while I will always prefer living company to keep trips interesting, I do agree with their essential premise. Because the Miguasha hiking shoe is gorgeous, and built to last. The beauty of the Miguasha is not only their fine leather aesthetic, but more so their functionality. Shoes are shoes, sure, but do you feel comfortable going everywhere in your hiking boots? No? Me either. Their Miguasha shoes have this classy look with a different kind of comfort that can be worn anywhere. If I was going out on a weekend trip or some multi-night wilderness trek, I would absolutely only bring these shoes and nothing else. Why? Simply, they work for the store, for the airplane, for the trail, and even for a night out.

The Miguasha hiking shoe is waterproof and breathable, made of an extended comfort Gore-Tex construction, adding a lot of support and protection in a casual look. The upper construction is a 1.6 mm oiled nubuck full grain leather, which is joined with a tough Vibram outsole. The design is so brilliant that I believe Garmont thought of everything, because they designed a heel pocket into the back, which prevents heel slipping and those dreaded blisters that come with seemingly every new pair of shoes. Providing a cushioned balance and stability, the sole is a durable dual density microporous rubber. The Vibram outsole is crisp with deep trenches that grip in all terrains, with spaced lugs that help prevent caking of mud.

All in all, after testing the new Miguasha shoe, I came away extremely impressed with Garmont. The shoe looks awesome, feels better than most traditional hiking shoes right off the bat. The materials used, and the construction and build out are high end and well worth the price tag. Hiking shoes are one of those things where you get what you pay for, and I will gladly invest in a pair of shoes like these the next time I need a new pair.
